I just discovered nikonrumors about one hour ago so I apologize if I offend anyone with my rookie post. I am trying to purchase a d300 and need some advice. However, I first need to tell you a little about myself. I was involved with underwater photography about 10 years ago when I owned a Nikonos 5. Since that time I went back to school and got away from my photography hobby. I am not up to speed with Nikon cameras but I used a d300 and loved it. I also like how it can handle the elements better than a lot of the other Nikon models because I will be taking a lot of photos on the water, and hopefully under the water when I can afford an underwater housing.
I contacted the forum because I would like recommenations on purchasing a d300. I plan on purchasing a used or refurbished d300 because of the price. Any advice on purchasing a used camera? Someone on the forum discussed shutter use. So the camera keeps track of the number of shutters (shots)? Once a camers shoots a certain number of shutters I assume the camera degrades? Can the camera be repaired? Is this expensive to "tune-up" a camera?
What about the price of the d300? They already have a d300s yet the old d300 camera's still cost a fortune? Do you think the d300 camera's will come down in price in the next couple of months? Any advice on where to shop for a used or referbished d300? I have been looking at ebay. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

The D300 Camera is a good camera and the D300s is also a good camera if you don't mind the DX format. I think the best place to go to purchase used equipment is http://www.keh.com they are fair and the prices are equal to the quality of the camera.
I wouldn't worry about the amount of clicks the D300 and D300s are rated at 150,000 clicks. My current D300 is pushing 225,000 clicks and I still use it almost daily. I am sending it Nikon in about a month for cleaning and check-up. This will be the 2nd time they have reviewed the camera. I trust how cameras are checked and repaired and updated.
I would never trust a purchase of this type to anyone on ebay. You are spending too much money to trust someone who is going to tell you that their camera is better than the other cameras for sale. I trust people who love cameras and know cameras. The other place you can check is B&H camera or Androma.
I have seen a few housing for underwater work but what you need for a D300 is going to run you $1400 if you purchase a trustworthy housing. The great thing about these stores are you can rent equipment.
I hope this really helps. A few people on this site tend to go very negative on each camera you have to realize that you like the camera that you like and it's what you do with it that makes it great.

What are you looking to spend?

I am hoping to spend $800 to $900. I only want to purchase the Nikon D300 body at the moment. The D300s is nice but I would rather save money then purchase this newer model.
Anyone think the price on the D300 will come down soon?

wait for next summer it'll come down - I suspect the D400 will be THAT much better, that the D300 used prices will plummet like the D200 used prices did when the D300s came out (33% drop from what I could tell). . .
Hell, you can get a D2xs for $1500 used now of these days. . .WOW!

I remember when Best Buy cleared their D200 stock a few months after the D300 came out. It was $600 for a new D200! It was a different situation, though, and there's no telling if that will happen with the D300.

yeah that $599 deal was literally a deal of a lifetime. . .although if it's an indication of their profit margin on those semi-pro bodies, Nikon must make a MINT per D300s sold (since that 10 mpx sensor wasn't more than $300!). . .I would imagine though, like Jonny said, it'll go down, but by how much, and given the different economic forces in play now with Nikon and tightly controlled dealer inventory, would be difficult to peg a % decline. ..
