I find that when I've changed my focus setting from my standard S to either C or M for a particular situation I sometimes pick up my camera and shoot frames with the wrong setting. I think it would be useful to have C,S,M info available in my viewfinder.
    Is this just my problem?

Welcome to the forum, stillsman. I know what you're talking about; one time I did a large family portrait (~25 people) and had to reposition everyone as I found out 5 minutes afterward that I had been in M focus mode on my D300 and was back focused in every shot. Embarrassment doesn't even begin to describe it, but at least I caught it and fixed it before I got home!

That is one of my main criticisms of the focus mode switch on the D200/D300—it's too easy to accidentally switch since it's right where my fingers are while holding the camera.

yup, I know this problem, especially on d200 - it's such an annoying feature - they should move it somewhere else, or add a dip button (if You want to change the position You have to press it and then rotate)

Thats kind of old tech .. will probably be gone soon... yeah nikon should redesign that to make it even less easy to change ! LOL .. people will complain ! hehe..

    maybe a locking mechanism needed?

oh .. yeah .. what adamz said :-)

Oddly enough I always check the M,S,C switch before I do anything. I mostly shoot in AF-C so I just leave it there. If you use the AF-On button you can use focus trapping, no need to worry about ever using AF-S.
