was browsing Bhphotovideo and came across the D5000 page and it says D5000 is discontinued by the manufacturer. is this true?

doubt it. . .unless Nikon is collapsing the D5k and D90 into the D8k. . .

I think it's just the B&H kit (NID50001855K, note the K) that was discontinued.

Just that particular kit is nolonger availabe. Actually it is but as wafwot said without the "K" at the end. No big deal.
