A good friend of mine, who is a videographer, has recently purchased a point and shoot made by Canon. It has some really off the wall features, like a self "timer" that recognizes a smile or a wink and fires the shot.......
Nice gimmicks.
What interested us, is the fact that the camera is a claimed 14.something megapix which seems a bit crazy considering the size of the sensor chip....storage is by means of a card and the highest possible quality setting stores pictures at a maximum file size of 2.5k. A Nikon DSLR (of 12 Mp) at the highest setting in JPEG, will store a file approximately double that size.
My questions are as follows;
1) Have they got their compression codecs so good that they can do this without appreciable loss in quality?
2) Is the 14 Mp just a sales gimmick?
I'm sure that there are many other questions to be asked, and maybe they've already been discussed here, if so, point me in the right direction and shoot me with your mouse!
