KR, you know who he is and if you don't then don't worry about it ;^), says Nikon will introduce the D500X with the same 24mp sensor as the D3X. It will be a smaller lighter body than the current D700?!? He says it'll shoot at 3fps in FX and 5fps in DX (at 10 megapixels in 1.5 crop mode)and have the same 51pt AF but with 95% viewfinder coverage. ISO will be 50-6400 with low and Hi modes. Apparently it will NOT shoot video so all you Nikon 720p haters can keep on hate'n.

Although he says the price will be close to $3000USD these specs seem more like the rumored "affordable" full frame camera. Sony already has the a850 with 24mp priced at $2000 so why not Nikon? Or perhaps this "prediction" is just KR F**king around with us and just an attempt to get traffic to his site. That would certily not be the first time right? ;^)

Let's not turn this into a KR love/hate fest and keep the comments on the BS, I mean, rumored camera and specs.

We'll know soon as he says it'll be announced July 1st 2010 and in stores in September. Oh and he also says there is a D700X coming too with practically the same specs. Ha Ha

but yeah those specs are crazy aren't they? I mean there's nothing really new other than the name D500X. If Nikon were going to do something like this (smaller lighter body) then the price would certainly be a lot less than $3000. The body would have to be plastic too. Or no?

The D300 replacement would be, one assumes, a DX camera. So IF the D500 is full frame what happens to the DX semi-pro body after the D300/D400?

Yeah, a body with like that should be $2500 at the most.

I think the body would have to be plastic, if they want to make it significantly lighter than the D700, but it could still have some rubber seals. If this D500X was the D300s replacement then I think the pro DX body would be dead, or the D90 type body would move into take its place. It would signal a significant shift in the camera lineup, but the introduction of the D5000 did that already.

How did the D5000 do that? Are you saying the D5000 is the next D90 and the D90 replacement is actually the next D300?

That is kind of what I am thinking, if there is to be an FX camera between the D700 and a D300s priced body I'm not sure what else they could do. The D90 replacement and D300s (FX) could even share the same body, with only sensor/prism size separating them.

So would a full frame "D500" be good or bad then? I sure would want one even if it did have a plastic body. But would people waiting for a D90 replacement pay more for it than the D90 if it had more D300 features? And would those waiting for a "D800" go for a cheaper "D500" instead?

What if Nikon gave us a 24mp full frame "D500" that was smaller,lighter and cheaper than the D700 but had no video. They then also give us a D800 with 14 or 16 mp with improved ISO and full HD video? Would everyone be happy then? Would such a line up make sense?

Interesting. The name and some of the specs are different, but I think we can all agree that Nikon will come out with something to compete with the 5D Mark II. Still, there is an awful lot of hype in the form of "traffic-getters." Maybe I'm just more interested now than ever because a) I'm looking for a full-frame that I can print larger with that will fit my budget and b) I will have this kind of money this summer. I just have to keep things under control since there's also a possibility that merely making a camera to compete could result in a situation where I would've truly been better off just buying a D700. Either way, I find all this very exciting.

I'm not sure if it would be good or bad, I have mixed feelings, one saying it is good, another bad. Nikon would lose the "Pro" DX body, but then many of those users might be on the edge, and willing to buy a D500X type body, but not be able to get the D800 or D700s or whatever it is. In some ways the D500X could be the best of both worlds, a high resolution (24MP) FX body, and in crop mode a "Pro" 12MP DX body. Nikon could boost performance of the 24MP camera with dual processors, such as what Canon has done with it's recent models. A D500X would be a 7D killer for sure, at least for those who are more interested in the still photography side of things.

no, there's still be some ppl whining that they want a smaller 24mpx body with full hd. as for PB PM idea, it's probable that d90 will evolve into semi-pro (dxxx) and dxxx will evolve into cheap FF

No matter what Nikon announces, someone's always going to be whining about the specs. I think it has been pretty much "confirmed" by Sony that video would NOT be possible with their 24mp sensor. So a "D500" full frame would not have video unless it was a totally new 24mp sensor. If that were true then the price would not be that low or else it would eat at D3X sales.

Let's hope that at least the July 1st announcement date is correct :^)

Yes there could be because there was never a D2 for example only a D2X.

This is interesting. A few months back I was travelling back to North America and was sitting next to a lady who claimed to be an optics engineer with a camera company. see the "Not what we expected" thread. What I gathered back then was thatthe D300s would be replaced by the D500. Interesting. I hope the other information is accurate.
