I had these posted in the P-A-D, but was asked to remove them due to the adult content of the photos. The photos are a 3 part series that I have to do for a class in college. The photos must be of a theme, in black and white, and on film. These are what I'm turning in, they were shot with both a D700 and a F5 with a 50mm 1.8 lens. Please feel free to leave comments or feedback, both good and bad, as that's how I learn to get better. I'll post the 3rd one when I get done with it.
    Thanks for looking.

Quadra- It was more of a not safe for kids deal. Adam felt that the "coke" was a bit adult for some of the younger eyes that visit the site.

BTW I am sure Alpha has a second account.

Hey Alpha I am sure Skid's next photography project will be about baskets full of kittens. Fear not!

I guess I'm a blood, guts, and boobies kinda guy when it comes to thinking if something is not suitable for work or kids. On the subject of drugs, I do think children should at least know before they turn 10 what drugs are/do/and why they should be avoided.

This forum is 18+ for few months already. We do have a policy against pictures illustrating drugs use - this is probably why Adam had a problem with it (he is just doing his job). I assume (and hope) the drugs are fake since it is for a school project - maybe you can indicate this in the comments.

If the coke wasn't enough, I'm sure the heroin would be =D

    What exactly was the assignment?

I feel like you've been watching too many movies in college and not doing enough actual drugs. I think you could evoke a lot more emotion if it wasn't so staged. Compositionally, you've got the bottle right in the middle. On the right most third would prob have been better. And the guns have a nice arc to them that could lead your eye around the image.

If this was supposed to be something other than a technical assignment I just want you to dirty it up a bit.

p.s. Make some rails for the blow.

'boobies'? Strange you should say that about the only natural and normal item in this whole thread. I'm no whining liberal about these things, but I do think there should be less of it on TV impressing kids and setting the (low) standard.

Very nice pics by the way. Good luck with them.

Agree that it looks too "staged". The placing of the stuff looks like its in a window display and positioned at evenly spaced positions, composition is also a bit clumsy ( you did ask for C&C :-) ). Nice tonal range though. Real sharp, focus is good.

Third and final shot up. Just to clarify things...The revolvers, cigars, cigarettes, lighter, and Jack Daniels are real. The "Coke" is baby powder and the "Heroine" is Jack Daniels sucked up into the syringe. All 3 images were staged and taken on the same card table just with different back drops. All photos posted were shot with a Nikon D700 with a 50mm 1.8 lens The photos to be turned in were shot with a Nikon F5 with Ilford HP5+ film.

I had fun doing the shoot. The hard part that I failed at was to make it look more real while obviously a staged shot.

Yeah man you need like a drugged out hooker in the background clenching a Jack Daniel's bottle, with upper lip smeared in the baby powder "coke" and the needle somewhere laying on the floor.

That hat is horrible. Something that a five dollar New York City pimp would wear. It just doesn't fit in the image.

    EDIT:

Don't get me wrong the photos are fine. But they are missing the human element. they are all nicely arranged as if for an advert. I don't know maybe that was your point for the project.

I would do it differently. take a couple of females. Do some "crack whore" make up. Rent a seedy motel room. Neatly "demolish it", just make a lot of mess. Play with mirrors in the bathroom. throw a heroin needle into the sink, crack maybe a small mirror inside the sink( to avoid breaking the bathroom cabinet mirror), drop the needle inside the sink, Have some blood drops here and there. Arrange one larger piece of mirror in a way to show the reflection of the person's face standing above the sink.

Play with shadows. Create atmosphere of a "rock and roll drug party" in a seedy motel. Or a horror scene from a movie.

Or have a guy "execute" the hookers.

Or better yet, create a scene of a Russian Rullete gambling party. Have some seedy psycho type of characters sit by the table, snort some drugs and play Russian Rullete with the guns. You can tell them to so some crazy facial expressions or something. Next photograph could be like a side shot of laying body and "brains" splattered on the wall.

    EDIT #2:

Maybe I shot start doing these type of projects. I have some free time on my hands.

I really like the first one, although the second gives a nice mood too - it's missing (apart of the hookers of course) cigarette smoke and ashes - would make it more believable. as for technical point of view, they are fine IMHO.

As for using drugs... well, I'm definitely against this, but I know that a lot of students are using them on daily basis, which is so sad.
