A very notable Canadian photo equipment retailer is getting an unusual number of D5000s coming in for screen repair. The screen flickers and in some cases goes blank for no apparent reason. Most of the cameras that have been returned for service we sold after the model was first launched about a year ago. The expected problem.....wiring coming loose due to screen articulation.

Any one here have that problem yet?

No, a municipal government and I own real estate development company. I did own a few photo stores in the past......over ten years now. Wow time passes quickly. A friend of mine is looking more to Nikon and I was doing some research...I though the D5000 would be a good choice but now I'm not so sure.

Then I don't understand what you mean when you say

And let's not start a "panic" by saying "all" D5000s have faulty LCDs. I personally have not come across this problem with any D5000. Remember the 70-200 zoom and flaking problems turned out to be "nothing". Then there was the "rumor" of amazon stopping the sale of the 70-200 because of a "problem". That turned out to be nothing too.

Sorry, I wasn't that clear was I? The models being returned were some of the first manufactured and sold almost a year ago. The returns have increased in the past three to four months. May be nothing to it but the retaier told me that it is very unusual to see a high number of returns for Nikon products. Apparently quite a few Canons are returned for service each year.

Yeah canon's are know for their crappy reliability. The D5000 got recalled soon after it went on sale. Perhaps these were cameras that were not fixed by Nikon during the recall?

    Maybe. But wasn't that a power-up issue? I don't recall exactly.

    Still....could be a related issue I guess.

Yes but I'm just saying maybe it's related somehow with the early D5000 production? Regardless I've never experienced a problem. Though Nikon is pretty good with fixing "wide spread" problems with their cameras.

Could be. Either way the D5000 seems to be a very nice camera with excellent specifications. Right now I am leaning toward recommending the D90. I have never used it but really seems to be a gem.

I have the D5000 but I leave the screen flat to the camera (display side out) unless I need to use the articulation which is not often at all. From my professional life I know to expect the number of articulations to have a limit, so I don't use it unless necessary and then don't rush it - especially when the weather is cold and so it is most likely to not like being used harshly.

Failure in a year is a problem though.

The D5000 is our best seller of any DSLR at the moment, I have not sent any D5000 in for repair lately after that power supply recall last year

It wouldn't surprise me if it was from people breaking the LCD by turning it the wrong way since it only rotates half way on one side.
