I'm interested in buying one. I was at the Toronto Photographic, Video & Digital Imaging Show last weekend and asked a rep from Hoodman and he said one will be available in stores soon.
Just curious what some others have out there.... thanks.
Anyone using an aftermarket LCD monitor cover for D3 or D3s?

I'm not a fan of those "thick" plastic LCD covers. I just use the cling type "film" that are meant to protect PDA and iphone screens. They work great to protect a camera's LCD and they don't add "bulk" to your camera. Just make sure you get the good quality sheets. There are some cheap clings that distort the screen. I don't remember the brand that I use but the sheets cost me about $10USD I think. I just trim them to fit the top and back of my cameras' displays.
Here's a picture of the "film" cover just so you'll know what I mean

Could try Zagg covers as well - everything proof!

there are also the glass covers, which have an adhesive bottom and stick to the monitor, as for plastic ones, I don't like them - once some dirt or sand goes between the plastic and the screen You can easily scratch the second one

Someone on these pages recently recommended GGS covers. I suggest you check them out.
They're made of very thin glass and have adhesive on the edges. Once fitted they seal the screen from dust and give a perfectly clear view with no distortion. As Adamz says, grit under a plastic screen can be a real problem.
I'm very glad I listened to the recommendation!

damn, those GGS covers are slick- they have them for the D300 and D90, pricey, but nice option.

The GGS covers are very thin glass so they are VERY brittle and easy to crack and/or shatter. All it takes is a well placed tap with a hard edge and bam it shatters. I've seen it happen on a friend's canon.
I've had cling film protectors on all of my Nikon's and other digital cameras for many years. I think my Sony 717 is the oldest and I've never had any problems with air bubbles or dirt. Just make sure you give the surface a good cleaning before applying and that you have a good fit.
Don't leave an overlap where dirt or air bubbles might get in. There are some "cheap" adhesive films that do distort the screen but the one's I use are of a better quality and have no distortion. Sorry I can't find the packaging and I don't remember the brand name I use.

Thanks for all your input everyone!

Hoodman,...works like a OEM product.

My ipod has the 'clingfilm' (thick) type all over it and it is indeed excellent. Heals up if you knick it and is super durable.

I'm not familiar with the term GGS, but if you mean the ultra thin glass covers that are (in the UK at least) branded Giottos, then they are the ones I use. I can not speak highly enough of them! Not cheap, but the glued edge completely seals the screen so nothing can get in between, they are multi coated, scratch resistant, and although I don't doubt what Niko says, I have found them pretty tough. For what it's worth, they definately get my strongest recommendation.

Those GGS ones are different from the Giottos SkintBrit, amazon have them here: amazon.co.uk/Protector-Transparency-Anti-scrape-BV-Jo/dp/B003VWFZNG/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1294764181&sr=1-15

I don't know if you've seen the ones I use, but if so I would have said they were anything but. In fact out of all the bits and bobs that I have bought extra for my cameras, I would say they are the things i'm most pleased to have found. As you say each to his own, but if you haven't seen/used them in the flesh, I'd be supprised if you weren't impressed.

I just like the feel of the lcd screen caressing my cheek as I peer at the world through my viewfinder.
As I said, what's right for one person might not be right for another.Posted 2 years ago # -
Giottos fit perfectly on my D300s, it's M-C Schott glass from Germany. Got no issues with it so far. Adorama has one for about 1/2 the price, which i doubt uses Schott glass.

I use a giottos SP8304 Aegis Multi-coated LCD Screen Protector for both my Nikon D3s and D3X - this is by far the best product I have found.
The “AEGIS” Professional LCD Screen Protector from Giotto’s is made of tempered optical glass from “Schott” Germany. The 12 AR Coatings on each side eliminate glare and light reflections on the LCD as well as aberrations, residual images and ghost images from the CCD. Giotto’s AEGIS completely protects the LCD from abrasions, scratches, impact, dust and moisture. The AEGIS is designed for digital cameras and camcorders with specific screens protectors for Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fuji DSLR’s. The top layer on each side repels dust and moisture to aid in keeping the Aegis clean! The Aegis adheres to the frame around the LCD and is not in direct contact with the LCD screen. The Aegis is easily removed by heating it with a hair dryer!

I don't like using glass covers because they can easily shatter with a well placed tap.

Hoodman looks OEM

Adam let me tap the edge of a coin on the center of your glass cover and let me show you what I mean :-P

Niko, I use my cameras to take snaps not to experiment with them :P, I know that once You tap the edge of a coin on the center and hit sth the glass will most likely broke, but it's a case with all protectors, and most likely my glass protection will give me more peace than Your foil :)

I ended up going with a Hoodman for my D3. . . fits well, just annoying to get little pieces of lint behind the screen. . .

Is there any difference between GGS and Giottos (apart from the price)?

I've never seen the GGS one spraynpray, but according to broxibear the Giottos is better? I have a Giottos on both my 700 & 3s and as I said earlier, am realy realy pleased with them. The Giottos ones are made of INCREDIBLY thin glass by Schott of Germany, and fit perfectly over the original screen. They have a very thin strip of sealant running all the way round the very edge, so once on, no moisture/dust/dirt can get between the two surfaces. I have obviously not gone out of my way to try Niko's suggestion, but in a year of professional use, they still look like new, and far more importantly, so must the original screens underneath.
