I posted this on dprev but thought I would post it here also.

I am looking at the two test results on DXO Mark's web site for the Canon G10 and Canon G11.

As per the tests done by this website, the G10 bests the G11 in terms of image resolution at the lower ISO range.

I do not see this reflected anywhere in the DXO Mark results.

As a second point, would a 9 pixel sensor with 1mm square pixel size win the ultimate score on DXO Mark?

Is color depth, dynamic range and low light sensitivity everything one needs to know about a digital sensor? I would think the number of pixels would account for something but where in their data is it taken into consideration?

What am I missing?

I tried emailing them but DXO Mark is not responding.

Try reading their FAQ which clearly states their methodology.

Also this is a NIKON forum so you might want to go to a canon forum if you are looking to buy a G10 or G11.

As I understand the G10 had higher resolution at 14.7MP but terrible ISO and the censor produced a lot of noise because the resolution was perhaps too high so they dropped the resolution back to 10 and cleaned up its ISO performance and now the images are much better on the G11. I will be buying a G11 for my girlfriend's birthday this July actually I think they are great cameras!

I think DXO takes color, dynamic range and Iso skills into account so basically resolution does not matter. This seems to be Nikon's focus as well because they stick with the same 12 MP censor and yet Nikon has 4 of the top 6 cameras on DXO.

I think I saw somewhere that the G11 is also a Back illuminated sensor..But I think I only saw it on one site so I am not certain..

It is believed that the G11 and S90 use a Sony sensor but they are not back illuminated.

From what I understand they don't take resolution into consideration. That's why they can rank a 40megapixel medium format camera right next to a 12mp Nikon. Otherwise it wouldn't be much of a "contest".

I think i remember seeing somewhere that the Fuji HS10 had the same sensor as the G11... But I don't think I saw it any other place so ... dunno..

I'm still skeptical about the way DxO mark includes resolution. It seems from reading their FAQ that their calculation takes manufacturer specs at their word, which IMO goes against everything they're claiming to do with their test. What I mean is, I could take an AA filter that smears things out for a 6-photosite radius and DxO would still take the physical resolution of the sensor as the resolution of the sensor. Does that bother anyone else?

No, they do for all of the final numbers that you see, Niko, which is why it's even more impressive that the D700 beats out the 5DII, for example!

Resolution is not factored in the DxOMark Sensor scale formula itself. However resolution is considered when normalizing the DxOMark Sensor scale; to that end, all metrics are normalized considering a defined printing scenario.

doubling the resolution adds:
3dB to the normalized SNR
0.5 bit to the normalized DR
0.5 bit to the normalized TR
1.5 bit to the normalized CS.
