I just ordered it, used. The longest lens I have now is a 55-200 (which is great at f8) but this should be a different class of glass.

I shoot surfing a lot, which is often at f8-f16, but I think the extra 100mm will be nice. I understand it's a bit soft from 200-300.

    Thoughts?

+1 on a review and pics. I think we can all benefit from personal reviews of many of the lenses.

I have had this lens for almost a year now. I researched it extensively and thought long and hard and finally bought it for $1230 from 47th street in NYC. It is a wonderful lens!
I got involved in bird photography last fall and took it to the Everglades in Feb/march of this year. I found that I could, with relative ease, capture birds in flight while hand holding the lens. It has been great with either my D300 or my D700. I couldn't be happier. I also got some terrific "airborne snowmobiles" last winter due mainly to the fact that the sun on the snow was so bright that I was shooting at 1/1600 second and faster. Hand holding under those conditions is a breeze!! I really think most folks would be very happy with this lens.

one of the best, if not the best sigma lens - great price, nice handling, fast and reasonable priced (before the price went up), anyway a good choice - the only con - Sigma

I think you have to us Sigma TCs with Sigma lenses.

The Sigma 1.4x TC allows for autofocus. The Sigma 2.0x (and all non-Sigma)TC allow for only manual focus.

The limited reviews I could find on the 100-300 seem to suggest that it maintains relatively good IQ with the Sigma 1.4x TC.

This is my first non-plastic cheapo lens other than the new 50mm 1.4 AFS.
