Hi.. Just after your opinion of what you think of your D300s..
I’m only about 2 months off buying one…
The next upgrade ( maybe the D400 ) would be good.. but that could be next year & I can’t wait that long.
I want to use it for a wide variety of shots ranging from motor sport with a long lens to night shots of old historic buildings ( with street lighting ) etc.. etc..
I realise a D700 would be better suited for the night shots.. but then you have a more expensive camera & then need the better lenses to compliment it. = $$$$.
So what’s the D300s really like… Should I be worried about noise for the night shots, or am I over worried. ???
Who has a D300s ??

My D90 does fantastic at night so I doubt the newer D300s is worse than it. Still the difference between DX and FX at night is immense.

I have a D300s and I love it.... No problem with night shots, as long as you have the right lens for it. Although i have to admit, if i was goig to do it all over again i would have just gone to the D700 and got it over with. So instead i am just buying FX lenses for my d300s and then i will upgrade the camera...

Shot that at 11:30 at night....

This shot was taken at night with a 30 second exposure at f/16 and with a D40X ... I do believe that you are overthinking it.
If you want to take night shots handheld, then get a 3Ds.

This was shot with a D300s handheld
1/30 sec @ f4
ISO 3200
18mmThere has been no noise reduction applied to this image.
I believe that although the D90 has the same sensor, it handles high ISO better than the D300s. Why that should be is beyond me.

The D90 applies noise reduction even with NR turned off in camera, which is why it gives cleaner, but slightly less sharp results at high ISO Rusty.
When I shoot at night, it is from a tripod at ISO200 so any camera with manual control over exposure will work.

Thanks for that, good to know.

I have a D90 and a D300s. As PB PM suggests, they process the image slightly differently. But I think they are very nearly equal in IQ. That said, for me there is a lot of difference in handling. I find the D300s with its direct access to the controls to be much easier to use.

I agree completely, they also have a very different "feel," the D90 feels almost like a toy compared to the D300s which is chunkier and (for me anyway) feels like I am holding something.
My wife, on the other hand, says that the D300s is too heavy for her and with the battery grip she enjoys it even less. She prefers to be able to "sling" it around. I have thought about getting her one of those nice leather camera holsters.

I was surprised to see a photo from my hometown lol. Anyway, nice shot :)
But 3200 doesn't seem to be usable (to me).Posted 3 years ago # -
This is the same picture after the (minimal) application of imagenomic noise reduction software.
In my opinion, it renders the picture quite usable.

I love D300s AF, It's really great, color is a bit better than D300.
Now I'm using it and waiting for new FX body. (I'm sold all my DX lens.)
