I had taken a picture with my D5000 and the results was a 3MB picture.... I want to enter the same in an online contest where the same has to be less than 500 kb... is there a way I can convert my photo to this requirement?

What software and type of computer (Mac/Windows?) are you using? If you don't have any you can download Nikon ViewNX, it's free, and it will allow you to resize your photos for emailing etc.

What other criteria did the competition specify? eg max width and heights?
Also be careful that the competition is not a "Rights Grab"..
