The 18-105 is a good lens, some here say the best kit lens. If your interest is limited to family photos, you could save money by buying the D5000 and either pocket the difference or use it to also buy a 35mm f1.8 for its speed.

D90 D5000 difference was on this forum too many times, let just put it like this:
If you don't see the difference yourself than you would be better of with D5000.
Sure, enough to buy the 35mm f1.8 at least - I don't know where in the world you are for pricing. For your aspirations the D5000 would be plenty of camera, you would get the same pictures with it as the D90.
Just a thought.
