I would normally use zone focus for motosport, but in some cases continuous servo seems able to cope OK. Anybody got any idea of what speed it will track at if the target is coming more or less straight towards you? I know around 140MPH is a no-no!
Camera is a D5000 (if it makes a difference).

The one area were continuous AF can struggle is subjects that are moving quickly towards you. As long as you can track the subject you should get some decent shots out of a burst.
Good question and good point PB, continuous servo AF was designed for sideways moving objects. Now I wonder how fast sideways moving objects ...
Hard to say. The speed it could work at would depend on how much light there is, the level of contrast on the subject, etc.
The 3D tracking mode will work even for on-axis movement (toward/away from the lens). I've tried it for people running straight at me (much slower than 140mph, true ;-) and birds, and it does pretty well. Just experiment and see if it works for you. Like Rob said, there are a lot of factors that go into it.
