   I don't think that cell phones are ever going to actual replace DSLR, but I do believe that they will slowly replace P&S cameras, and if Nikon is hoping to keep their Coolpix line healthy, maybe they should actual make a coolpix phone

   Yes this was covered before and most on NRF did not think that this would happen either, however Sony's new 14.1 MP sensor is found in several P&S models and brands, what will be next, properly a Cell Phone

   Not everyone wants a smart phone, I for one one would love to have a compact phone with the same IQ that is found on the latest P&S, so I really think that if Nikon want to survive in the compact camera market they would have to start making a Camera phone.

   No way will cameras in phones replace DSLR. That will never happen. Even if you could somehow get enough quality and zoom range into a phone, you still won't get the nice things we expect from DSLR's: twist to zoom (as fast as you want), turn the focus ring for manual focus (as fast as you're capable of), through-the-lens composition, and a nice size, shape and weight for tracking moving subjects. This is all giving them the possibility of putting fast autofocus and TTL metering (rather than estimating metering based on images coming out of the imager and running calculations on them).

   Won't happen. I'll never give up a DSLR.

   Oh, I almost forgot: do they think they're going to put a tripod mount on cellphones? And what about bracketing, full manual controls, aperture priority mode, and other features that would confuse most people who bought the phones?

   My post tittle was only meant to draw attention and refer to the quote by Nokia, what I really wanted to discuss was the fact that Nikon needs to have a Coolpix Cell phone and it could have a tripod mount, if not the Coolpix line will be loosing ground to other Manufactures that will adapt

   Cell phones won't replace DSLRs, but eventually they could replace P&S cameras. There are already some pretty decent 8mp cameraphones out there, and although they don't have all the features that a P&S has, the way that technology is advancing, I'm sure that in a couple of years they will be able to merge a good phone with a good P&S. So yes, nikon should definately start to engineer a coolpix phone, if they aren't already doing it.

   Maybe low end consumer Dslr's will fall victim to what point and shoots are already going to, but the serious DSLR aint gonna die soon and will never be replaced by a cellphone. EVIL and shutterless cameras in a DSLR format is the bigger threat...

   I kind of agree. People don't want JUST a camera anymore. They want a device that multi-tasks just like they do. With sensor technology improving yearly it's only a matter of time before mobile phones become just as if not better than point & shoot cameras. Sony is suppling the next generation of iphones with their imagining sensors for example.

   I don't think mobile phones will match DSLR (well maybe just canon's,ha!) until they get creative with their lenses. DSLRs have the lens advantage that no small mobile phone can match. They might get great low light sensors but they'll still have crappy plastic lenses. I think small lens technology advances will really be the end of DSLRs as we know them today.

    That didn't go anywhere, this post is slowly going in positive view on future Nikon Cell Phone plans

    So should Nikon get into Cell Phones or just let coolpix get terminated ;~)

    I agree, the P&S and DSLR are very different markets.

    Merging a good P&S with a decent cell phone (i.e. adding phone functionality to a compact camera) seems like a no-brainer and I'm quite surprised it hasn't happened already. The only drawback I can see is size, and whether people would accept such large, heavy phones.

    DSLRs are a different matter entirely. We accept the weight and size as a trade-off for flexibility, IQ, etc. and there's no way I see these merging. Mirror-less, however (as in Thom's graph), is a threat. Several years ago I had a 'bridge' camera with an electronic viewfinder (Minolta A200) and it's always been one of my favourite cameras. I prefer a true pentaprism viewfinder, but I would compromise if it offered sufficient advantages (e.g. size and weight).

    But Adams not everyone wants a Iphone, not that there is anything wrong with them, I rarely have my camera with me, My current 3.2MP phone sucks with how you operate it, IQ is a the best fair, but I always carry my Phone, Always, so why not have the ability to get a better picture

    OK take a look at the Sony TX5 that camera is small, tough and waterproof and surely could make a great design base for a Camera Cell Phone, it would then have a great 10MP sensor, 4.5Zoom, real camera controls and touch screen

    So looking a the graph from Thom, I would say that Nikon is going to have a tough time going forward. They don't have anything in the 2 growth areas, mirrorless or cellphones

    But I am afraid that the Nikon Leadership might be sitting on their fat behind and just wonder why they were left behind just like it happened with their Stepper Equipment

    Lets see it try and pull off 1600 ISO. I don't even think it'll do 800. But in well lit scenes, it looks good.

    The reason that I have started a few threads on Camera Cell Phones is simply this:

    The IQ of Cell Phone with a Camera will slowly get better and properly be at par with your regular P&S in a few years. Yes it will not do well at ISO 1600, neither does your regular P&S. and the tittle of this post was just to draw attention

    Also a great camera is one that you have on you, I always have my cell phone with me, Always. Most of the time I don't have my regular camera with me

    Sorry Adam but I really think that Nikon should get involved with making a Camera Cell Phone or most of us will simply be Shooting with a Nokia P&S Camera(Cell), for that matter I hope that Canon will get into this also, so the Quality improvement would speed up even faster
