sorry to say this, but You have to be really closed minded to blame company maker because the battery is not working, show me at least one company that produces batteries that are working as new ones after certain period of time - the truth is that there's not a single one that will do this job. So instead of blaming your computer spend $129 and get yourself a new batt.
Btw: how could You use win7 for 1.5 years when the final version is on the market for only 6months
I think I'd like an ipad if I were on the other side of my student career. As it is, I'd like USB and stylus-only note taking (meaning it would read the stylus but not my hand if switched to that mode). That would make me reconsider. I think I'll buy a tablet when my laptop dies, but it won't be an ipad. And I'd really love one that runs google chrome OS.
Windows 7 on MacBook is not yet supported as far as I know (XP and Vista are), but if you do run Windows I see no reason to go for MacBook really.
And Johny you are ours golden (platinum) child ;)

BMX and NSX thankyou for responding respectfully, but I don't think you understand, let me fully explain it. Adamz next time before jumping to conclusions and calling me close-minded why don't you take a breath and count to three first and then let me explain.
If you read my post first post in this thread i said the logic board is failing, which is what is causing the battery to not charge. The battery itself is fine (actually its pretty incredible, I have used it quite a lot and the health is still 96%!)
I was not going to retell my story, but now I will. My laptop was working totally fine, I was working on a paper, I put it to sleep to go eat dinner, didn't move it, left it on my desk. Came back up to my room an hour later, opened it up and it would no longer charge. I took it to the apple store and after looking at it he basically told me "We can send it away for a flat rate of 250$ and it'll get fixed" he didn't tell me what was wrong with it, nor did he check the battery until I asked him too (I mean come on...), I asked him what is wrong with it and he said "It's probably the 'board' or something, you know these things happen man".
I'm sorry but I don't think a laptop should just spontaneously fail just months outside of the manufactures warranty, given that you pay a premium for their products (Apple).
As to the windows 7 thing, sorry I guess I didn't say that clearly enough. I meant I've been using windows (xp first and then when the beta came out for 7 using that) on my macbook for 1.5 years.
I've never bought into the Apple hype, but I grew up using PCs so I guess it's no surprise. I've been really impressed by Mac OS when I've used it and the hardware seems like it's great quality.
It seems like the downside is less modularity (wait, should I be putting this on the modular DSLR thread?)—A computer and monitor all in one? No thanks. I can build my own computer with better components and less cost, though, so I don't think I'll ever see a reason to switch unless it's a software reason.
Foofie, sorry about your macbook. My laptop screen broke 2 weeks out of warranty, though I think I have an explanation for it—I forgot to put the Don't Tread on Me label to keep my 2-year-old off of it. :-( (And if you think I could have kept it somewhere safer, you don't know my son. There were no safe horizontal surfaces because he's a fearless climber.)
I was really tempted to junk it and buy a new laptop, but I took a gamble and bought a new screen off of ebay for about $140 and installed it myself. Two years later, it's still running well and I see no reason to upgrade it because the software I run on it isn't too resource-hungry (sigmaplot, GNU Octave—a free Matlab clone, maple, office). I had to replace the battery a year ago, but I feel like the gamble has paid off.

You're too kind, mb.
In my experience, laptop batteries last about two years; after that just bite the bullet and buy a new one. Macs and PCs are the same - chances are it's the same battery in a different casing.
I've recently retired having worked almost all my life in the IT industry. As far as I am concerned Macs are far, far better than PCs FOR HOME USE and especially for photo enthusiasts. I cannot understand why anyone would chose a PC for home use. (OK, there's about a 6-10% price premium for buying Mac, yet we all buy Nikons when there's plenty of cheaper cameras out there). But each to his own.
Jonny, I suspect someone is @@@@-ing about with your membership status. I look forward to seeing what you are next week ;)

as stated though, the problem had absolutely nothing to do with the battery. according to the employee the "board" is whats at fault by which I assume he means the logic board.
6-10% price premium is being too nice, it is definitely more than that. I would say it depends on what you need for home use as to which is better. If you are at all comfortable with computers and comfortable doing things yourself I would say that a mac offers no real benefits over a home pc.
I'll admit I love those cinema displays, but another company actually uses the exact same displays in their monitors, and you can get them much cheaper. I can't think of who it is off the top of my head.
I will say however, if you are looking for something not complex, a mac is a pretty good route to take, despite having to pay the premium.

Hey thanks Valon!
OK, so I'm giving up trying to keep this on topic so I'm changing the thread title. Otherwise in the future when someone tries to look for this thread they won't find it.

Foofie,
I picked up on the 6-10% premium from an independent assessment a couple of years ago. Part of the problem in comparing costs is that Macs are often better specced than what appear to be similar PCs. I have both Mac and PC laptops of similar age which cost more-or-less the same, but the Mac has much better specs.
I've worked in the IT industry for 35 years on systems big, medium, small and enormous. I've used all sorts of operating systems, but mostly Windows for day-to-day use. I've had the use of Windows systems at home for free. Yet, curiously, for years I've spent my own hard earned cash in order to be able to use Macs at home. To me, they're a no-brainer for home use. Busman's holidays spring to mind?
But the important thing is each to his own.

Mr Terminator,
That's why we love Nikonrumors - debates evolve in such interesting ways!

Sorry about the misunderstanding!
I sometimes don't read properly.
Just because this thread doesn't have enough anecdotal evidence in it yet: my G4 powerbook is 5 years old and has suffered numerous falls, I've ripped a part off the logic board by accident while upgrading my hard drive and had to solder it back on, and it is still chugging along fine, although I think the speakers are dying. I also have a ~10 year old G3 powerbook, which is running perfectly still, also despite less than careful handling, although I did have to replace the power input plug and the associated card when I dropped it while it was plugged in to the wall, which cost me $40 and about 2 hours.
Personally, I don't see any Apple tax when the macs I've bought have literally never broken. I still use that G3 powerbook today, when I need/want to boot into OS9. I see my friends replacing their PCs every 2-3 years because the thing is so bogged down and parts are falling off it that they just don't have any choice. When I replace my G4, I'm convinced it will be because I want something faster, not because it actually broke down.
EDIT: Oh, and just like DSLR bodies, always buy used if you can. It makes a huge difference in cost. Buying a 1 year old used model can easily save you hundreds of dollars (~1 month old 15 inch powerbooks are already selling for $1350 on Apple's refurb page, down from $1700). Unless you need such cutting edge hardware that you are buying a new computer every year, you won't even notice that you don't have the very fastest.
I have had a desktop PC running and never breaking down for 7 years. the only things that were upgraded were the hard drive and the graphics card.
It all depends on the user. If you are proactive in maintenance of the system it will last you for good. And this whole "ohh virures broke my pc" argument is bull.
in related news, my ipod nano 3rd gen is awesome. It's still going strong. So no complains here.
I think I'll rename this thread again. How does "Too Lazy To Start A New Thread So I'll Hijack Another Thread And Make It Kinda About Mac Computers Thread" sound?
EDIT: Dang! It's too long of a title :^)

Hmm not sure if I agree with you there. For the most part it seems macs aren't nearly specced as well a lot of the time, but instead are built more centrally around their parts (ala the logic board as opposed to a generic motherboard) allowing better compatability, although I will give that lately things seem to be evening out a bit more. Although certain models make absolutely no sense at their price points still (Macbook Air comes to mind)
but as you said to each his own. And also to be mentioned I am using a macbook right now, haha, so I am certainly not an apple hater, just dissapointed with this experience, enough so that I probably won't buy an apple computer again.
I actually have a friend that works for apple and normally I would probably go that route to get this fixed, but unfortunately (and I do truly mean unfortunately) he is currently not talking to me as he is having some personal problems.
interestingly, If I would have purchased apple-care it would have come out to about 250$, or exactly as much as having it repaired would cost me, hah.
So what does everyone here use as their computers?
The only reason my primary is a macbook right now is because I'm in college and going to school across the country from my home, so a desktop wouldn't make any sense, although it'd be a lot nicer for editing. Although next semester I'll have digital darkroom access with nice mac pro machines.
Whenever I end up changing out this laptop, which if things get worse will unfortunately probably be sooner rather than later, which would really be unfortunate because I am trying to save money for a new body (camera-wise) I'll probably go for something similar to the dell mx11. nice and small, but very powerful for its size (under 1000$ too). Although it is a bit flashy, but what do you expect, it's an alienware.
Foofie- I personally have a old HP desktop. (19'inch screen) Ive had it for over 5 years now.
I am too going to college and decided that a desktop was too much. I feel that i didn't have to have that much of computer hardware until the end of college.
After days of waiting. I think im finally going to get my my Ipad 64gb today. Though i reserved at the local apple store... I still havent gotten a notification of it being in stock. I called up and asked if i was still on the list.. and they told me they just got a shipment in and that it was in stock.. even though i didnt even get the email.
I wish Apple wouldn't be such a cock tease. Seriously no webcam? I would buy the ipad if it had one damn it!
But good old Stevo is going to "awe" us with the new more innovative model update in 7 months time, a bigger capacity and ...... hold your breath...... a webcam. Yes you heard that right. A webcam. ***Fireworks****

Don't be shy poster, tells us how you really feel about Steve Jobs :^P
The ipad is OK. I really prefer a laptop for "serious" work. The ipad is more of a recreational thing. The screen is still too tiny for me. I'm mostly using it as a portfolio to show off my work. However I'm not sure I'm going to keep doing that. Most of the time people want to just play around with it and ask me about the ipad versus paying attention to my work :^(
The lack of a webcam really doesn't bother me. The absence of at least one USB and no Adobe flash, however, does hurt a lot.
Niko I didn't know you were a fellow iPad owner :).
I just got mine tonight, I love it even more after I figured out what my wifi password was. Syncing photos could be easier as drag and drop.. Such as a thumb drive or something.
Yeah at times it really feels very limiting. The lack of a USB is just one thing. Visiting flash based websites really ticks me off! Navigating around is fun but often times (with webpages or with lots of text) it can get a bit frustrating because of the small screen.
Of course it is better than surfing with an iphone but I can't wait for at least a 15inch screen to come along. Having to constantly readjust and move around such a "smallish" screen gives me motion sickness.
I'm looking forward to seeing bigger, stronger, faster touchscreen tablets from Google and others.
