I just saw the review of the P100 by photographyblog and i must say, it's video mode seems quite impressive.
What i'm wondering is, does the very good AF while shooting, video menu, dual-mic , etc show us anything about how Nikon will do video on their DSLR's?
I am sure software development from P100 will be used on future DSLRs.
I am not so sure about dual-mic feature though, you could get much better results from external mics.
certainly, but the D90 is aimed at an audience that will mostly not be using any external accessories, so i'm convinced the built-in features will be a priority
I think the internal mono mice is alright for p&s video because at the end of the day
you just want to hear what they are saying if it is a family event but for other more serious stuff NIkon has added the external stereo mice in, same as in D300s and other cameras don't remember which ones.
As far as software from p100, Nikon should of done it long long time ago. They need to look in to all cameras that shoot video with in Nikon range and find a way to update the firmwares which people have been asking for it.
I am sure that the next line up of Nikon DSLR will have all the features that we have been asking for video if not better.

Disagree. Canon has already put an external mike input on a D5000 level camera. Not to put a 25 cent mic input on a $1000 camera would be a very dumb move. Mono internal mic is just fine - if they bump the spec to stereo that's fine too. But if you care enough about DSLR video to put up with the limitations and use it creatively, you'll want that mic input.
I'm adding my video want list:
Say it's a D7000 (D90 replacement). The 1080i spec indicates 2nd generation video - lets hope they:
*extended the record time from 5 minutes - even a small improvement would be helpful
*new video codec - some flavor of H.264 please - would probably help with above
*mic/line audio input
*swivel screen (640x480 min)
*better contrast-detect AF for live view and video (I tried out a D90 the other day and man, it just doesn't work hardly at all!) again even a small improvement would be helpful.
*Keep a 720 24p option add 720 30p and 720 60p
Yeah, I'm pretty much asking for a T2i - why not?
Well Canon copied Nikon with d-move mode but done it a step forward. What Nikon should do
add all the features from Canon but go a step further. Fix the jelly-rolling shutter possibly few option in recording compression.
1080p, different frame rate is the thing of the past every Nikon camera should have that

To be clear, i certainly hope the D7000 has an external mic, i would be shocked if it didn't. I meant that the built-in mic should be more than a tiny mic in the back somewhere, the P100's big dual-mic setup is a good example of what would be great.
An analogy to my point would be advocating a really good pop-up flash as most users don't get an external one, i don't mean that the camera should not have a hot-shoe.
And my analogy would be that there is no such thing as a really good pop-up flash, just like there is no such thing as a really good built-in mic. Usable? Yes. Useful in a limited way? Yes indeed. Replacement for the real thing? No way.

I like your analogy, clillja. In-camera mic is useful for sound sync, just like on-camera flash is useful for fill light (i.e., with flash compensation set to -2EV or so). But in a pinch I'd use either of them for other things, too.
I disagree about the mic input, though. If you're serious about sound, even a mic input in-camera isn't enough. I love my digital Zoom H4n field recorder, though (~$300), and it does phantom power for XLR mics—something I doubt they'll ever put in an SLR. ;-) The built-in mics on that thing are better than I expected when I bought it, and I bought a $10 hotshoe to 1/4"-20 adaptor to put it on top of my camera. I get stereo sound and the audio quality blows away the built-in mic. It would be nice not to have to worry about it in post, and for that I'd like a stereo line input in the camera more than I'd like a mic input—you could just connect the output from your mixer/recorder to the camera then.
Ditto on the Zoom mic.
Anyone who is really serious about video does not even bring audio into the equation. They have an independent audio setup and mix everything in post.

granted, my pop-up flash analogy isn't great. But i think it still fits: the mic on the D90 is like the flash of a P&S compared to the dual-mic setup of the P100.
I don't have a D90, so this could all be BS, but isnt the P100 style dual mic much better than the 3 small holes the D90 has in front?
Im sure it's "good enough" buy who here is satisfied with that?
I wouldn't say the P100 is indicating anything. Remember that it replaces the P90 which was basically the "same" camera as the Kodak Z980 and the Pentax X70 and one other manufacturer model(Samsung? I think). So the P100 is probably not even a "real" Nikon design from the ground up.
Nikon probably builds the P100 under some kind of licensing agreement. Or someone else builds it for them and they just slap the Nikon logo on it. Just like the P90.

Exactly. And a MIC input is a line input with the right setup (impedance matching and AGC cancellation).
@johnnyapple - do totally love your idea about mounting your zoom H4N - but isn't the zoom is going to catch some ugly camera noise up there when you least want it?
@gleu88 - plenty of people out there who are serious about video and don't have the $ for a dedicated sound crew. Funny thing, A lot of them shooting DSLR's instead of "real" video cameras... And of course you're right, dedicated sound is the way to go for the absolute best result, but it just isn't happening a lot of the time. Just don't think two crappy little on-camera mics are going to make a difference (over one on camera mic) for those folks. But they'll buy a Canon over a Nikon (all else being equal) just to get those mic/line inputs.
I gotta tell you, after looking at all of the new compact digital for this Spring season, the P100 is pretty much the cream of the crop - from features & price combination viewpoint. Sure, it's an indication of where they are going - you should be optimistic about the video capabilities in the new SLR's due this Fall!
