I have just purchased a Infrared (IR) Pass Filters for my Nikon D300 and 16-85 VRII lens
Anyway have you used such filters and have any recommendations for how to get great results from it.
If I like this, then my next step might be an IR converted Camera

I have a D70 and a D700. I use a B+W IR filter, although I hear the Hoya one is excellent. I get much better results from my D70 for some reason. Before I take the pic I set the white balance at the grass. Compose, adjust for the focus shift, and use a high F stop to help with focus, put on the filter then bracket about a dozen shots. I'm also messing with the bracket shots do a HDR file to help get the clouds better, but haven't had much success yet.
It still doesn't have the dreamy / grainy effect that B&W IR film gives you but it's still a decent look.
It is my understanding that Nikon has been working to put significantly stronger IR filtering in front of the sensor in recent bodies, to improve IQ. In these bodies just using an external filter should be problematic, Nikon does not want them to respond to IR. Just a bit of reading on the internet indicated the D70 was the best model for IR, out of the box. It was made before the trend to stronger IR filters in front of the sensor.
It also implies that for the D300s, if you get it modified to be an IR camera, it will work much better than just using an external filter. The mod removes the existing filter and replaces it with one made to pass IR. This is probably all better explained on the web site of the IR filter manufacturer.
check out some of the photo's I've taken with my converted D50. And disregard that it put my post on the thread 5 times, lol!
I'm making UV photography (with a B+W filter 403, which as well allows IR to pass). I began with a D200, and the result was fine. I later bought a D700... And the result was incredibly... bad... So I kept my D200 for that reason (and others). As Sandpiper already mentionned, newer cameras have much stronger UV/IR filters on the sensor (in part for image quality, but also for the focus of the Liveview I think, because UV and IR have a slightly different refraction index than visible light). I first thought the sensor type was guilty, as the silicium quality is different and influences the absorption in UV wavelengths for example, but at work we have Canon 20D and 40D which have CMOS as the D700, and they are fine in UV. So definitely the filters are the problem... I don't know how evolved the D300 sensor is, how different from the D2x it is (Bjorn Rorslett tells us not to use the D2x in IR, so I think the result cannot be better with the D300: http://www.naturfotograf.com/index2_PC.html)...

As well you might need to be carefull on the lens you use... More glass elements=less IR/UV. For my pictures, I use one of the simplest Nikkor, the 50mm 1.8. If I'm not short on light, I close the diaphragm a bit to overcome the focus decay...
Bringing this post back from the dead.
Two questions:
1. Has anyone tried IR on the D7000? Given that each successive camera seems to have stronger IR/UV filtration built in, I'm guessing it'd be well-nigh useless for IR, but I'm curious if anyone's tried it and gotten decent results.
2. Is there a film that's an acceptable substitute? From what I've seen elsewhere, Kodak's IR film was discontinued ages ago, and the Ilford isn't quite an IR film... are there any other options out there?

Thom Hogan says the D7000 has Nikon's most aggressive IR filter yet. "much tighter cut off of near IR"
