Interested to hear how it works out for you, no consideration for the 28 f/1.8?

@ Emceee I have some thought on the 28mm f/1.8, but some reviews suggested it was not up to the caliber of the 24mm f/1.4. On the other hand, I can get the 28mm plus the 105mm f/2.8 VR Macro, for the price of the 24mm. But, the 24mm has such an outstanding record on PAD, it is hard to resist.
We will see in the next few days what I decide.

will order the 24mm f/1.4. So, I am accumulating the rationalizations necessary to drop a couple "large" on the 24mm Nikkor. How about getting smooth bokeh on an ultra-fast and extremely sharp prime?
Astrophotography and starlit landscapes become something else with that one.
Shooting without flash at relatively low ISOs is also a refreshing experience.
Try it with ND filters in daylight @ f/2.0 as well..I dare say you will not be sorry.

and the Zeiss was inconsistently out of focus. This could have been my error in part, but I was manually focusing all the lenses and all seemed to work well except the Zeiss.msmoto, the Zeiss 28mm has a known field curvature issue, which may be and probably is the root cause to your experience. Of all the Zeiss lenses, the 21mm and the new 15mm are the ones to get. And the 100mm f/2.0 macro is probably the best 100mm macro around this corner of the universe.

Wow, field curvature was so unbelievable... at three feet the corners would be focused two or three inches closer. And, for reasons not understood by me, a lot of variation even when focused with live view. My other manual focus lens, the 24mm PC Nikkor was always on target in the same conditions, so I apparently was able to see well enough to focus at f/3.5, I figured I should be able to focus at f/2.0. I have a 20mm and my 16-35mm f/4 Nikkor is so razor sharp at 16mm (see PAD today) I do not see the use of the 15mmm Zeiss.
I can see myself now...24mm f/1.4 Nikkor, 100mm f2.0 Zeiss...Yikes, four large...
Thanks, you have pushed more towards the 24mm Nikkor as I see it...

I really enjoy using the Zeiss 100 Makro-Planar but I sometimes miss focus as well. It's frustrating when that happens. So far all of my shots with it have been handheld and no tripod. Usually it's my fault due to movement as I'm pressing the shutter or I'm trying to capture a look before it changes and not quite being focused. I did exchange my stock eyepiece with the 1.2x magnifying eyepiece (not sure of Nikon model number) and that helps a little with visually focusing. One thing for sure with that lens, when it shows you're in focus, you're definately in focus. Love it when you can count the eyelashes.
I'm totally out of money now so that's it for new lenses for a while although I'm really interested in the Nikkor 35mm f/1.4.

My problem with the Zeiss was the camera showed the little round "in focus" dot, yet the image was way out of focus. So much -20 would not get it corrected. And, the money thing affects us all. I might be able to spend the money but I do not want to just blow dollars on something with which I have a negative relationship, i.e., "bad vibes" and have it sit useless in my bag. Thus, a negative experience with a lens and it must be returned.
I might go with the 100mm Zeiss, f/2, but at present I am thinking my first choice for the "next jewel" would be the fast f/1.4 24mm as a walk around lens. I have the 135mm f/2.0 Nikkor which is a phenomenal piece of glass. And, the 85mm f/1.8G Nikkor works very well for macro with extension rings. So, I need almost nothing, but get very confused between the words need and want.....must be they both contain the letter "N". And that rhymes with been and spelled backward is neeb which rhymes with need.
Meredith Wilson I love you...:-)

Msmoto: My 24 1.4 dials in at -20.

Everytime I get an urge for a Zeiss glass I throw on any of my old MF lenses and then I convince myself not to get one. My eyesight is just not good enough to hit focus enough other than the "dot" which never seems to get it "right" - I often think the "dialing in" focus doesn't work for the dot. I'm sure it does though.

Where in the (D3s D700) book does it tell you how to manually adjust the in focus point of a lens. I've just bought a "focus pyramid" and will make time to try it with all of my lenses, but can't see anywhere in the manual instructions for doing it?

@ SkintBrit Page 339 of the D3s Manual... This is under the "Setup Menu" the one with the wrench as a symbol. Page 347 in D700 Manual.

I thought you were going to say they don't mention it, as they want you to leave well alone. I presume the camera has the ability to store an individual setting for each and every lens, and then apply the right one to the correct lens each time it's used? What would happen if you had two copy's of the same lens?

If I do another IR-only camera I will get one for sure as I always have to MF for that.

@ SkintBrit... my understanding is the camera uses the ID of the lens and whatever is attached but can only store one value for a particular type of lens. If one has a TC in between the lens and body, the focus correction is for the combination. I think one can store up to 20 values.

Tommie, Thanks for your candid experience with the Zeiss and the various comments regarding AF. My 85 f/1.4D is so far out on my bodies that I really need to replace it. I was contemplating the 85 f/1.4 Zeiss, but I think I may have begun to take AF for granted and may have forgotten what a pain it was to focus quickly on the fly. At any rate, I think you'll be pleased with the 24 f/1.4 ... I'm interested in hearing where it ends up with AF fine tune.

I was out today with the 24mm f/3.5 PC Nikkor, doing the fall color thing... manual focus, no problem, but with it i use the live view if I cannot see well in the sunlight.
I will call B & H tomorrow and see if my Zeiss is in their hands, and if it is, order the 24mm f/1.4 Nikkor. I have my son's wedding to do some candid stuff after the formal shots are completed and I want to use the 24mm f/1.4 on a D90, the 85mm f/1.8 on the D4. Thus, kinda like a 35mm and 85mm.
We will see...I like the speed of the primes and I am not a lens changer in the middle of the battle.

OK, got my 24mm f/1.4 Nikkor...AF tune at -14. Looks far better and focuses much better than the Zeiss. I suspect there was a problem with that copy. I will be testing out the new lens wide open in a day or so. Love to shoot these things on the edge.

Does anyone have experience with the legendary 28/1.4D ? I had a chance to buy one for about $2k a while back but opted not to. Glad I didn't with 28/1.8 widely available

I think I am going to like this lens....here is wide open, f/1.4 at 1/60 sec, ISO 1100.
And the large size shows it holds up well even at f/1.4

Oh, didn't even get out of my car...just rolled down the window and click. No HDR, just click!

Fantastic shot. From what I have read, from those that do own this lens, you are going to love it, as much those of us that shot the 14-24 2.8. Looking forward in see the amazing blown out back ground this lens can do on close up subject at 1.4.
With respect to HDR, hopefully you will be able to share some of that with us as well.
Enjoy your new tool...cheers :D

Pretty sharp wide open, isn´t it? Try f/2.0 and you´ll get more sharpness and much better contrast and less magenta tint. I prefer to shoot mine at f/2.0 for the aforementioned reason.

Ok I have a question to ask...even if it make me sound like a beginner. I have read many times on our forums that user like Wataru statement blow. How is this done and what is it all about? Thanks for education.
It´s about calibrating the camera & lens combo to focus more accurately. In the wrench menu find "AF Fine Tune". There you can make adjustments and save your settings for each lens. More info is available in the Nikon user manuals and there are excellent and pretty cheap lens calibration targets available either commercially or on DIY websites.
