Killermac, I wouldn't worry about the overlap at 105. The 105 macro is two stops faster than the 18-105 zoomed to 105mm, is a macro lens, and even at f/5.6 the 18-105 has significant vignetting at 105mm. I'd still recommend it, though, as it's a great little lens.

I have a 150 macro which I really enjoy using, but, I also have an 18-200 and am planing to get the 50-150 F2.8 when I have the required funds.. You need to think about function and target use. Focal length only plays a small part in the decision. why not just get the 18-105 for now and play with that. Lots to learn from just that lens. then later go for the specialist lenses(macro, portrait, lowlight, birding, etc..). if you really find that you really like macro then get that superb 105 micro nikkor. In the mean time just use a multi element close up filter like the raynox for macro work. I wrote a mini review some time ago.. http://www.nikonnative.com/d/node/17 I still use it as its just so convenient compared to the big macro lens.

Heartyfisher that is a pretty interesting little macro device. I like the idea of placing it in front of the lens and doing work with it. Might look odd to others but who cares. Thanks for the suggestion.

Camera ordered :>). Look forward to getting it. It will be a change from using a friends cannon XSi.

Congrats! ... err... what did you finally order? lenses ?

I ordered the 55-200 Nikon VR and the Tamron 90mm macro lens. I look forward to working with these since I enjoy up close and some landscape photos.

That Tamron 90 is a brilliant lens. My dad's got one and it's got some -slight- problems with longitudinal CA around really bright highlights when focused close to infinity. Here's one I took with it a while ago:

Hey Heartyfisher, that is a very usefull review of the Raynox, thanks. I like the idea of something that I can quickly and easily clip onto the front of my 18-105 and keep the VR, seem to give amazing quality too.
I can feel one coming on as I type this.....

nice picture JA, the details are amazing

Indeed JA nice shot. That cropped would be cool also. :>)

Thanks, Killermac and Adam. I've got to be honest and say it's already cropped (maybe half of the original in each dimension?). I kept scaring them off when I tried to get closer than a few feet.

Just joined the group, new to the DSLR arena, have/had some digital point and shoots, still have a old Canon Film based SLR in the closet, haven't used it for quite some time (e.g. just like the instant gratification of the digital format). Anyways, not to prolong the subject, but I'm in the market for a new DSLR, looking at the D90 and teetering between buy now or wait.
Anyways, looks like you can get the D90 for around 1029-1199 at various reputable retailers. I'm wondering if this has been the average price since the D90 introduction or are these prices starting to reflect a possible D90 replacement?

I have been lurking for some time but could not resist joining to say that I pulled the trigger and purchased a D90 today.

I got my D90 for $750 along with a 70-300mm VR lens for $389 from J&R. The J&R website lists the D90 at $899 but it'll be $750 once it's in the cart. That qualifies for a $200 instant rebate for the $589 lens. I used Bing's cashback program and will receive an additional rebate of $60.
The logic behind my decision to buy now is D90s are selling used on eBay and Craigslist for the same or even more than I just paid for a new one. If I just have to buy whatever comes next, I'm confident that it will very easy to sell the D90 for the upgrade.
My trusty D40 and 55-200 VR will get handed down. I can't wait to get started taking advantage of the 3200 ISO performance and wireless control of my SB900.

If I already had a good all-around lens, then I would go for it. At this point I think I am going to be happier with the 18-105 kit lens, not too big, not too limited, kind of an all-purpose lens (e.g. good to start out with anyways).

Welcome both of you, bbucy and towen. There were rumors of a D90 replacement last fall when I bought mine, too. I've had a great time and would have kicked myself for waiting if I had (waiting actually wasn't an option for me). IMO, the D90 is a better camera than most people will ever need, myself included (but I want a D700/replacement ;-). Add that it's at such a great price right now and I would say get it now if it's the right camera for you and what you'll use it for. It will still take great pictures when it's replaced. By the way, bbucy, I love that 18-105 even though I don't own it. I've used it and I'm considering getting it because it's such a bargain for what it does.

I spent months and months late last year deciding whether to buy a D90 or wait for a later model. I finally took the plunge just before Christmas (a Christmas present to myself!). Just a few days later, there was a strong rumour that a new model was imminent. AND, it was to include several features that I really wanted.
jonnyapple (and others) reassured me that I had done the right thing. And they were right. I've had five months of real pleasure using my camera and have taken lots of very pleasing photos. With not a single regret. It's a really excellent camera and I'm sure I will love it for years to come.
And even if a new model comes along tomorrow, my D90 will be just as excellent tomorrow as it is today.

I here what you are saying, 5-6 months ago I would of taken the plunge on a D90 without much thought. But, at this point, I'm going to be pissed if I pay full price for a camera tomorrow, then it is discontinued in a month or two and a replacement comes out for the same price I just paid.
I'm just not that familiar with new product introductions in the photography field. That's why I was asking about the price; basically trying to gage when the old start getting discounted or if it ever does get discounted or if it is already being discounted (e.g. D90 is a fine camera, even finer at a discount).
It just would be nice from my point of view if a young Nikon engineer would accidentally leave his Nikon D90S prototype at a german beer garden and a new upstart web-site (e.g. gizphoto or maybe NikonRumors) paid $5,000 dollars for it so they could tell us all about it in advance. :)

http://nikonrumors.com/forum/topic.php?id=2001As for the price drops. All indicators (very low prices, rebates) point to a new model coming soon. Also Nikon tends to replace their models every two years or so and the D90 will be two years old this summer. So the real question isn't will there be a replacement but rather how much more money and what new features/specs will it have.
The D90 at introduction was originally priced at $999USD for body only and $1299USD with a lens.

Hello everyone, I just joined the forum tonight:) Well as many of the people that asked you for an opinion of a D90 or D90 replacement, I can say I waiting till April to get my hands on my hopefully D7000, D8000 or whatever the name they give it to it.
I'm an Architect, and i really love photography, although I did not have the time/money to get serious about this wonderful hobby/profession while I was studying architecture. So last year I decided to give one of my dreams a try and get a DSLR camera. I did my research (as I always do with something I really care about) and I chose a D5000, over the D90. At that time I though I was better to invest on a lens than to upgrade to a D90 due to the similarites the seemed to have (Now I'm sure I made a mistake..lol. I can say D5000 as you well said is a consumer camera, but a really good one imo.So I heard Nikon may announce the new model(s) right before September(Photokina), and I can really say, I just cant wait to have my hands on a D90 replacement/upgrade. I take photography very serious, and i want to expand my horizons into an advance amateur as long as budget allows to it.
I'm thrilled with the possibility you mencioned before that Nikon merges D90 and d300 to get a new model...Do you think it may be possible? Are the gods so kind?...xD

The D90 and D300 are very close as it is, other than build quality, 100% finder, the ability to meter with Ai lenses, and a few other details.
Don't wait for anything. Just get the camera you need now and make your images. They're worth way more than any camera.

I've always thought the D90 should be more like the canon 50D so I wouldn't mind if the next D90 was more like the D300 and became Nikon's "top" DX camera.

That would utterly weird if Nikon blends the D90/D300 line, BUT, if they do, it makes room for a $1700 FX model, allows the D800 to have some room, and then of course there's that 50% price gap to the D3s. . .
So are we thinking:
1. D90+D300s=D8000 with all the features at $1299; 16MP.
2. Consumer-FX at $1696 (where D300s used to be); no AF motor, reduced AF points. 12MP.
3. Semi-Pro-FX at $2699; AF motor, same AF points as D700. 14MP.
4. Pro-FX; dual cards, AF motor, expanded AF points (think D4). 16 MP.?
Would actually simplify the lineup SIGNIFICANTLY. . .yield them with higher profits too.

Welcome to the forum, Highlandah. I was only guessing when I suggested that, but for the reasons clillja and Niko mention (almost the same anyway, competes more directly with the canon XXD line), I really think it could happen.
edit: looks good to me, shivas, except that I would think there would be only two FX—around $1800 and around $3000.
edit2: I see that's what you were saying now. I thought you meant 3 D700-like bodies.Posted 2 years ago # -
Sign me up for that line up Shivas. I'll take one of each please. Here's Jonnyapple's credit card number. He said I could use it. :^)
