Here's a pdf report from a warranty company. They analyzed the failure rate of 60,000 digital cameras within the first 3 years of ownership and came up with some interesting findings.

Most reliable digital cameras for less than $300

    1 Panasonic
    2 Fujifilm
    3 Olympus
    4 Sony
    5 Canon
    6 Kodak
    7 Nikon
    8 Pentax
    9 Polaroid
    10 Casio

Most reliable digital cameras between $300-$500

    1 Panasonic
    2 Nikon
    3 Sony
    4 Olympus
    5 Canon

They didn't have enough data to rank DSLRs but they did say that there was "no significant difference between Nikon and canon's reliability".

Panasonic is doing very well with their EVIL camera's and now they seem to a very reliable brand too. So it looks like Nikon and canon should be worrying about Panasonic over taking their sales in 5 years and not Sony!

#1 being the most reliable or the camera brand with the least amount of malfunctioning cameras (Panasonic).

Polaroid and Casio would be the brands with the most malfunctioning cameras.

Yes I see very few Panasonic problems at work and sorry to say do see a few P & S Nikon being send out for service. So from that I would recommend that Ext Warranty on that Nikon camera

At least Canon is consistent with failure rates! :D

But seriously, Canon probably sells the most point and shoots, but their failure rate is not as good as others.

We don't sell Polaroid but I would agree that most of Casio cameras are junk. I remember one model that battery door simply broke the second time I open the door, the door was simply that weak from a design point

    Haha!

I was actually surprised that canon's more expensive point & shoots such as the G11 seem to have bad reliability. Or at least that they don't have better reliability than the cheaper models.

I'm surprised to see the Nikon P&S rated lower than Kodak, most of the Kodak cameras I've handled that were made in the last few years feel like cheap junk.
