And what do you know I might just get it too, Yes the latest post on our trusted DpReview has this about a patent for a round sensor
So what that this happens to be April 1, that's just like any day on DpReview

Honestly, I've always kind of wondered why we don't have round sensors.
It makes no sense at all to pair up a round lens with a rectangular sensor. You just wind up throwing away parts of the image. At the very least they should be square. Why does Nikon get to do the first crop for us?
They also just posted the review of the 550D, so that should be a give away to the fact that April 1st means nothing to them.
Same or similar ideas have been around for sometime and the main disadvantage is that you must throw most of expensive silicon wafer in the production process to be able to produce circular sensor.
Well, round pictures kind of makes sense in the digital world, after all, a DVD or a hard disk platter is round no? So these pictures will stack pretty good, except for the hole it will put on their center :^)
Maybe I should file a pattent for round monitors and round TVs... gee, I can already smell the money...
Can someone explain to me the benefit of having a round sensor?
It seems like you'd have to then crop every picture you took in post. If you are going to have to crop it anyway, might as well just have a normal sensor (or square.)
The biggest advantage is that a 10 mp camera become a 31.416 mp one. No, but seriously, these days, the lenses cost more than the camera bodies, perhaps they should make rectangle lenses instead.
I still haven't heard anything to gun down Willis's square sensor idea, though. I say why not?
I vote against it because….
With pixels and wafers being such a pricy commodity, rectangle seems to still make the most sense; after all we rarely take pictures of square things. When taking pictures of a person, we usually want to see more of the person and less of the crap on the sides, that's why we go portrait. And when we take pictures of sceneries, do we really want more skies?
With the rectangle format, we also have the ability to slowly switch from portrait to landscape when taking pictures of our wives and kids as they become wider than they are tall with age.
What kills me is that I use to hate watching movies on old tubes as I was so annoyed with the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. When I bought my wide-screen TV, things got even worst. Movie makers can’t agree on what is a wide-screen format, so now I see black bars most of the time, not only the old fashion top and bottom ones but also on each sides and sometime on all sides. Even the picture I take with my camera never fit my wide screen computer monitors. These engineers never seem to be able to figure out the most basic things.
You guys do realize it's an April Fool's joke right?

Now Niko don't hijack my thread with this April fools thing, we are talking camera sensors here, I was going to give you a link to a discussion on April Fools but sorry can't help you there
Pete
Yes Niko I know that it was a joke, actually a good one too, and I want a square sensor anyway
Yes I know its an April fools joke. and bmxdad in right dont hijack the thread :-) but we did discuss this before and I think we agreed (at least in my mind, 8-) ) that an octagonal sensor would allow for the roundish sensor and still save on chip material as it can tessellate with a smaller square sensor.
Niko, you do realize that we do realize... Mmm.. or is it that we realize that you realize that we realize... Geee... I am getting all confused...
This round of April fools really got my head spinning... I see circles all over...

I see that you are a real Nikon insider, getting ready ahead of us for the next wave of camera innovations. That's exactly what we were looking for… What a lucky guy.
Looks like you have made this one yourself... So maybe you should file the patent... Also the perfect size for DVDs.
