I know this sound crazy but I was wandering what will happen if you install a
firmware from D3s onto D300s?
I read a review from Ken Rockwell that D300 and D300s are 95% identical a part from sensor even the firmware. So my question is can that be true for S models as well.
I am quiet eager to try the new 1.01 firmware for d3s in my D300s!
What will happen to my camera a part form not working? :-)

Wow, you're not actually thinking that swapping firmware will turn your D300S into a D3S are you! Is that KR's tip of the month? I doubt the firmware will even be recognized by the D300S.
I fill up my gas tank while holding a beer and lit cigarette all of the time. What could possible go wrong with that too?
I can almost guarantee you'll end up with an expensive and really nice paperweight.

Remember to keep a cellphone nearby too. I heard it gives you extra mileage.
If so, I should install the D3000 firmware on my D40! :D
It was just a thought Niko! KR's review give me an idea to ask the question. Of course I'm not going to experiment with my camera just because KR mention that the firmware are almost identical.
All I am after from D3s is the manual control over video nothing else other wise D300s is more than enough for my needs.
Who knows it my work?

Being a programmer I know that even if one byte was different things can go very wrong. so 5% of a firmware is a lot of bytes! Now add to this the fact that the D3 and the D300 class sensors are very different beasts and I would say you have Zero chance that they work together at all.
OF course I am not going to try it. If it was that easy I am sure that we would of heard it by now that somebody have tried it and catastrophe happen.
Worse case scenario is that you mess up the camera and that's it.
What I found interesting when I was looking at different threads regarding NIkon firmware hack was the fact that nobody managed to jail brake Nikon firmware same as they did with Canon.
I think its more that the some of the Canon ones had something of value that was disabled, whereas the nikon ones do not have any disabled features worth cracking for.
Adding features is very different from finding the disabling code and turning it back on.

I think with the Canons, those were more like point and shoots with hidden features Canon never put out, like Heartyfisher did.
I don't think they ever really modified the firmware for any Canon DSLRs though.
Yup heartyfisher speaks the truth. Canon is notorious for disabling features in their lower end models. The firmware hacks just enable them. So nothing totally new is being added that wasn't there to begin with.
