(*1) You can get a decent scan to 18 MP from a negative. Your 12MP sensor is actually made up of 4 different colours so it really is only 3MP (You didnt know that did you !!) extrapolated to 12 MP while the 18MP scan is truely 18 MP of RBG. So a decent scan of 18MP really has 6 times more detail than a 12MP camera
Depends on your scanner actually. I get great scans at 4800DPI from standard film, comes out at 30MP.
any body in decent condition will be just fine, as long as its not one of the more recent amature models which won't support manual lenses.
the FE2 is a great entry into the film world, I don't have any, personally, since I have numerous other Nikons which serve the same purpose, but its a great all in one, do everything body, in a compact size.
Yup, and it has a 1/4000s shutter speed, which can come in handy, if you want to shoot with narrow depth of field in bright lighting conditions! Being stuck with 1/1000s on the FE was kind of a pain, being forced to shoot at F16 when I really didn't want to.
Provia is great film, and of course the legendary Velvia but I find it difficult to use as its very sensitive and heavily saturated. People get great shots with it though. I love Kodak film of course and I really like Tmax for black and white usually ISO 400. Sorry Nikodoby I just wanted to sneak that in there even though this thread started as a film body discussion.
I'm pretty sure I will pick up a used F100 in my camera district. I'm about 80% decided now. The other 20% is for the Leica I'd love to have!^^
kanuck, You are right though with youd want to purchase those cameras! i bet they are amazing. Same as i went out and rented the Contax 645 which is on my list. I might as well rent it for the wedding i booked for June. I would need or want its uses. And having those photographs afterward is priceless

He is also traveling with his D700 and being Infrared film is very difficult to travel with and can be damaged by heat,I would just get a Infrared filter for his D700, that is that nearly black filter that only allows Infrared light to hit the sensor
Actually Kanuck this is one more most have for you trip, get that filter

I recently posted this same question on this forum and got some great advice from ChrisLange and some others. I ended up getting an almost new F5 for dirt cheap ($200). Great camera, only con I can think of is the weight.

Where did you steal, I mean get that F5 for only $200. Most on Ebay is in the $500 to $700 area

I got mine for 300 off of ebay. Great condition. I bet it was about a 90% condition F5

dream on with that 85/1.4. The glass doesn't devalue like the bodies do, and a ton of people love those lenses. It's pretty much the best short tele on the market in terms of build and optics, and it has got a totally unique flavor. Don't expect to pay less than $500 at the very least for one, plan on upwards of $800. I left mine at home because I don't feel comfortable leaving it around at school, so I use the 105/2.5 here (also a fantastic lens), along with a 180/2.8.
No joke! Cheapest I found so far was $900. Guess that's why I still don't own one. I'm in no rush though, I will win.
I have a neutral grad .8 which is almost pure black so I am hoping this will be alright for the desert. I wanted a 10 but I believe only Lee Filters makes them so I'd have to order it online. Yes I heard infrared film would literally cook in my car! It would be cool to use though.
Great deal on that F5! $200! However, I don't want that body because its a brick like a D3, D2H etc. I love the size of the F6 but hey, its almost the same price as a D700. Thats so expensive it better be your primary body. I still want that F100^^.

When it comes to film, the body is far less important than in digital, in all reality, it's just a box with a shutter.
photos from a 1970s vintage nikkormat won't look any different than those from an F6. Just keep this in mind.
what matters is your film and processing, or your lab if you use one. don't shoot seriously and then drop your film at wal-mart or whatever. If you care about your film, do it yourself, or bring/send it to a real lab.

Chris once again you are right can you imagine? Shoot a roll of expensive slide film and then drop it off at Walmart! That would be like buying a porsche and then filling it up with crappy gasoline. Fortunately I have a pro who can do my prints in his shop. I have made giant prints with him before and his colors are great.

yeah this is such a strange thing to come to terms with when shooting with film bodies. The only limitation I have with my FTN is the 1/1000th shutter speed limit. Past that, it's an absolute pleasure to shoot with and I have no reason to want to upgrade. Actually that's not the only limitation, no hotshoe either, so I had to get a bracket, but I hardly ever use flash, except for class assignments that require it, so not really a big deal.
But how comfortable you are shooting with it, IS important..
Yes you have to be comfortable with it for sure. Especially if you are visiting such a great location and want to get great exposures. My primary camera will still be my D700 and I want to pay under $400 for my film body. It has to be easy to use and light. The F90 and F100 sound like the way to go for me, but recently where I live it has become trendy to own film bodies again as well as rangefinders especially among students. So prices have gone skyhigh! The F100 might be over $600 if you can imagine.
Damn kids! They're ruining it for all of us real photographers! I'm actually very amazed by how these youngsters are hating on digital (grimace at Chris Lange) and make film seem like the "newer" technology. Film is so yesterday! Been there, done that :^)
What about a F80?
