I have a 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 GED AF-S lens on my D40X. Great lens but after I swapped it for my manual focus 50mm lens for a few shots, the autofocus stopped working when I refitted the zoom. In the viewfinder I see a message (bottom right, where the frame count is normally shown) along the lines of either r09 or r11 (the first character looks a bit like an r). I imagine that these are error codes. I get the red frame showing the autofocus point but the shutter won't fire. If I switch the lens to manual focus, I can focus and take a picture. Any ideas? Thanks.

Clean the CPU contacts, and the mount on the 16-85mm and the body, as dust or grime on either can cause disruption in communication between the body and the lens.

confirm, looks like the contacts are dirty - just clean them

use rubbing alcohol or ICE cleaner

The r11 or r09 you see is actually telling you how many shots are remaining in the buffer. But it should be able to autofocus, so you should still try cleaning the contacts like Rob and Adam suggest.

Sometimes the autofocus does not find something it can lock onto. I was at an airport friday and made a few shots of a blimp which had no markings on it at all...just a big white blob...and the autofocus had fits until I focused on the gondola and the ground next to it. I guess it was a lack of contrast.

Just another thought, make sure the switch is set to M/A, I know that is kind of obvious, but hey I've bumped it before and forgot.

It is either that, shoot manual completely, or get a D700... You might try changing your mode to point autofocus instead of area...
