Looking at other post, cameras (Cannon) and just casual internet archives,...it seems that Nikon is fixated on the 12mp camera. Talking to a friend the other day, he uses a Cannon pro series and commented on this too. Any thoughts?
Does Nikon seem to be stuck into the 12mp era?

Im sorry that I think this funny but I've been on forums for a 12-months now (april 09) and for this year, fashion has been vivid blues and greens, cooking food is reality television, Tiger woods had his own 12 and cameras with Megapixels were trunched by cameras with just 12 of them.
If I was to summarize ...
The tide comes in and it goes out again.I think talking camera brand is like supporting a football team, you dont play in the team but your team is the best, so you must be best.
Watching the Winter Olympics on telly, my Lyn said ...we won a gold. "Crikey" I said, I didnt even have my boots on. ..."Good for me"Posted 3 years ago # -
We have been over this subject more times than I even want to remember. Unless you need to crop a lot or need to print your shots so they cover the Empire State building, 12MP is more than enough for most people.

Any thoughts? No I think Nikon should make a lower quality 18-55 lens, get a hold of 18MP sensor, maybe Canon could sell them one, actually Canon could even help with the lens design. Add some 1080p video and here you have the perfect Nikon entry DSLR to compete with that new Canon 18MP
Really is that something you want Nikon to make, I don't
Pete
BTW pro Nikon gear have no problem holding its own against anything Canon has to offer and future Nikon DSLR's will have higher MP
Posted 3 years ago # -
neither do I Pete, as 18mpx means better (more expensive) glass and there's not too many places where You will actually benefit from having 18mpx (at least not a single one in the amateur world)

I am much more concerned with(interested in) IQ than the number of MP a camera has. Is there some neat thing you can do with MP that I don't know about?
Posted 3 years ago # -
12MP is fine with me.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Its probably more so that canon is fixated with producing too many MP ... both my DSLR have 6MP and they are still preety good :-) Wow! cant wait to double my MP when I upgrade sometime next year :-)
Posted 3 years ago # -
To be honest, I would love to have the ability to trade in half of my 12MP for double the ISO. That would make the D700 one incredible camera!

Yeah .. I would love a D3S sensor on DX 6MP crop( call it the D300I) .. I would buy that in a heartbeat even if I have to trade in all my other gear! Sigh.. maybe FujiFilm will bring that out.. one of those exr with BSI (Back Side Illuminated) CMOS sensor like in their HS10.. Sadly that will probably never happen.

Pbrid- I've been in the same boat. I love my D40, but would much prefer that it have the same ISO performance as the D3S's DX Crop mode.

I think that nikon has actually had an advantage in the Mxp war because their Iso is better because of it. Canon has always tried to appeal to consumers and students which is why their front of Mpx has worked so well, whereas that market for Nikon is only been recent. Nikon has in the most part, appealed to hobbyists, serious amateurs and professionals, an as a result has always had better minor details like ergonomics, camera control, and recently ISO quality. My 12.1 mpx D90 takes better night shots than my friends 50D and equivalent quality shots to his 18mpx 7D.
While Nikon should consider upping their Mpx because of quality, I don't think they are behind yet in the game. Most their pro cameras beat out Canons on DXO mark reviews. The Puny D90 was #17 on the list! It's Canon, Pentax, an Sony counterparts were down in the 30's, and while the review cant really judge image quality, it shows that mpx isn't always the main factor in high quality pictures or in the buying.
I Do large prints 16x24 40x60 etc and shoot with a 12mpx camera...

Nikon's D3X has more megapixels than any other camera from canon. So they aren't "stuck" on 12mp!
There has always been a megapixel race since the very beginning of digital photography. People mistakenly seem to think that more pixels equals better pictures. That's true if you are only interested in cropping but it's not the most important thing.
Back in my day we had 2mp cameras and we had to pay thousands of dollars for them. And we liked it! For many years Nikon's pro D2H cameras only had 4mp! And we liked it! You youngsters today have it all easy now with your 12mp cameras for under $1000! And yet you cry for more? Why I oughta.... :^)

I Don't cry, because now I want 3D, how no idea why, I actually hate these 3D glasses
But darn it Nikon give me 3D or else I will have to change to that 3D Fuji camera, I wonder how great my BMX pics would turn out with 3D and all ;~)

I'm a youngster and I don't get it either, Niko.

If you really need more resolution, shoot film. Seriously, a standard 35mm film shot scanned from the negative at 4800dpi is 30MP, you can shoot with any Nikon film camera you want! This morning I scanned in a negative from my parents Brownie Bulls Eye (medium format film camera from the 60's/70's), it came out to 166MP. Suck on that digital!

With all the MPs(eg:canon 18MP 550D)cramped up in that small sensor you wont have a sharp image with the basic lens kit, and if you dont have a sharp image the cropped images are gonna be much worse. If you really wanna unleash the sharpness and details of a 18MP then you need the high end glass which will cost you more then the camera.

Have you seen the 3D photos from fujifilm? Awesome! Would sure bring back physical photo albums. and you dont need 3D glases to see the 3D. Would be tough going PP on them unless we start getting specialised 3D PP software.

my 120 stuff from my rolleiflex, pentax 67, and bronica systems is head and shoulders above the 35mm in terms of quality as well.

I wonder if Nikon is still trying to use the designed D3 sensor and just maximize their returns from all the money they spent on designing it. I hear Nikon spent a fortune on research and manufacturing the D3. Look how many bodies have come with basically the same D3 sensor since 2007. The D3 itself, D300, D300s, D700, D90, D3x and the D3s. Just throw in a few tweaks on the original sensor and boom 6 bodies for people to dump their cash into.
I also don't think Nikon will release a higher MP body because of their expensive flagship body the D3x would see vanishing sales. This is not to bash Nikon in anyway. They are a smart business and afterall this is a BUSINESS where profit is the bottom line. I have owned 5 Nikon bodies since 2007 and will continue to enjoy all Nikon products.

I think the D300 and other dx sensors are quite different from the D3 sensors. The sensor in the D300,D300S,D90 and D5000, I think come from the older D2X and D2Xs class of cmos sensors. They are made by sony
I believe the D3 and D700 sensors are different. Probably designed by Nikon .. not sure who makes them though I have heard that they are also made by sony but I dont remember seeing any confirmed reports that they are indeed made by sony.
the D3X sensor I think comes from Sony.

Yes I have also newer seen anything confirming that the D3/700 sensor is made by Sony, D300, D3X are from Sony and they use their own version
Pete
Maybe Canon made them, but when their Marketing department found out that they only had 12MP, they had to sell them
Posted 3 years ago # -
LOL .. so teh D3S sensor is a canon sensor that was rejected by their marketing department because it was not 18MP !! I can almost believe that !! LOL
