    Hi all,

Have been lurking around for months, first time posting.

I am thinking to get the 17-55 and the D90 (Can't wait for its replacement, and i think it has all i need).
But 17-55 has been around for couple years, plus the release of the new Tamron 17-50 VC, do you think Nikon will review this lens and release a new version with better optics or even putting in VR?? Any thoughts??

Besides, Nikon hasn't release any gold ring DX lens for some time, do you think they are going to make all their new gold ring lens only for FX??

    Thanks

Maybe, no one knows for sure. I'm sure admin would tell us if there were any relevant rumors.

Nice to see another car fan here on Nikon Rumors, by the way. :D

    Welcome.

Gold ring doesn't mean one lens is better than any other Nikkor. Both FX and DX Nikkors have gold rings.

As for the 17-55 I don't think it'll get updated anytime soon. Since you don't want to wait for the D90 replacement why do you want to wait for an updated 17-55? Just get what you need. Go and try out both the Nikkor and the Tamron and see which works best for you. I personally prefer the Nikon 17-55 body.

If you're considering the tamron 17-50 (which I own and love), don't get the VC version because it's supposedly a lot less sharp than the original version.

I did read a review on a magazine saying that there is noticeable distortion on the 17mm

All these lenses will distort on the wide end. . .and it's noticeable regardless. . .

I've owned the 17-55 and the 24-70 and both distort pretty nutty on the wide end. . .

Regardless, I would I recommend trying all these lenses out before you purchase. . .there are significant variations in weight, size, length, etc. . .

The last review on Photozone felt the 16-85 was a more desirable overall lens than the Nikon 17-55. Thom Hogan also reviews the 16-85 well. I, personally, am very happy with the 16-85 and would rather buy it plus the Nikon 35/1.8 and Voigtlander 58/1.4 (for portraits and some available light work) for the same money as the Nikon 17-55.

If you don't use F2.8 a lot a lot, the 17-55mm is a lot of money, if you do, well then it is worth while. The 16-85mm does offer more range, but no matter you what you do, it will never have F2.8.

A lens i've been looking at is the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4

it has a nice zoom range as well as a faster aperture. It also does good Macro

While there are not too many reviews the few i've read at pretty positive.

    http://www.sigmaphoto.com/shop/17-70mm-f28-45-dc-macro-hsm-nikon

it goes for under $600, and there is an older 17-70 2.8-4.5 that does not have VR for $400-ish.

As someone who has been interested in the 16-85 for a while it seems worth a closer look.
