Ok I am using an sb900 with my d700. I have read the manual but it isn't all coming together for me, and generally I would read up on the internet but I have limited access.

When I am shooting at night in A mode, generally I would turn up the ISO and the F stop down to 2.8. When I put the flash on to TTL do I need to dial down to about 1.7 exposure?

Do I need to keep the ISO high when I am shooting with a flash?

ALso, last night I took about 9 shots of the same thing and only 1 look exposed.
Is something wrong with my flash? The first one looked good- the next 4 or 5 were terrible. My daughter said the flash was going off- but only the first one was highlighted with flash.

I know this is all vague without examples- but can someone give me some guidance.

    Thanks Guys-Appreciate it!~

You would use flash compensation (around -1.7EV) if you're using flash for fill light. It is possible that you use flash for fill even in mostly dark situations, but you make that decision. If you want to use the ambient light and then fill the shadows with the flash, dial the flash exposure compensation down. This is tricky because your flash will most likely not be white balanced to the ambient light, so you'll get blue fill light and yellow key light.

Setting high ISO will save your flash from having to output as much to expose properly. That can save batteries and allow more shots in a row with flash (because the flash doesn't fire at as high a power and require more time to recharge the capacitor). There's a cost, though, as you'll have more noise in your images. But noise is pretty well-controlled on a D700, I guess.

The nine shot story can be explained by the flash not having enough time to recharge. You can either set your continuous release to have more time between shots, open the aperture more, or boost ISO.

I would keep the ISO a bit high, to get some background in (ex. city scape), "feather" the light from the flash, and shoot it in manual mode. It's easier and more consistent than TTL. Plus it's super easy to learn.
