Perhaps it's my own insanity, but I can't leave home without both a spare battery and an extra 8gb card. Have I ever needed them. No, re memory, but yes re battery. Should I have known better with the battery, yes, but I didn't. Not being able to use my camera and lenses because I don't have enough battery power or memory seems more wasteful than the cost of an extra battery and card. I applaud those who can go without, but I'm (unashamedly) not one of them.
What accessories would you consider "must haves" for a new D90 - excluding lens

I always carry a spare battery and sd card with me. The reason is that if i know i have a spare of each, i will never "not" take a shot. Even when im pretty sure my primary battery will last, knowing i have a backup makes me shoot more.
I shoot with two $10 ebay batteries ever since i lost my original enl9. i have had one for 18 months and the other for 12 and they work perfectly.
As for a bag i generally agree with others above; get the cheapest name brand bag you can find, as you use it you'll find out that you don't like it and why. Only then can you make a proper purchase.
I have a Kata 3N1. I consider it an AWESOME bag. MUCH better than the lowepro slingshot in my opinion.
Finally, a bag is not a lens, get the bag that is best for you NOW, if its slightly smaller thats fine, there is always a "better bag" somewhere in the world.

When I am on a trip, I may not have access to AC power for several days. "Managing" my wife and mother-in-law is enough, I don't need to worry about watching over a single battery also. I will have a second one just in case. Also, when you have only a single battery, then it has to spend some time in the charger. During that time you don't have a functioning camera. That should be a hint about when that 'shoot it now or never' moment will come along!
Regarding the second memory card, there will be one in my bag when I get my 'new' camera and bag all set up. I have already had the experience of trying to take a photo, and discovering my memory card is back home in the computer. Call it "old timers" disease, or CRS, whatever. I don't want that to happen to me again.
But it all depends. Before getting the DSLR, I have been relying for a year on a Sony DSC-H50. I bought neither a spare battery or memory card for that. The controls on the camera were just so bad in my hands after some experience using it that I thought it was not worth putting any more money into it.

Meaning, charge it when you are sleeping. But, yes going on a trip where AC power may not be available is situation only solvable with two batteries, but for the general public shooting in and around their home, chances are they will have AC power anywhere. I can't think of a place that I go to in my life that doesn't have AC power. My car even has it .

I agree with exit here. Second battery comes in handy. While you use one all day, you leave the second charging to use the next day. Your batteries will last longer too since you're not constantly draining and then charging the same battery over and over. Not really, sure each one gets used less over a short period of time, but what difference does it make if you have two batteries in your possession for a total of 5 years, or one battery for 2.5 and another for 2.5? Frequency of charges doesn't matter, it's simply # of charges. Sure, charging batteries when they are hot is bad for them, but camera's aren't depleting them at a rate where they would get hot enough to make charging them after they have been depleted an issue.

You're right the temperature of my batteries is always at a constant 70F/21C degrees no matter where I am so I have nothing to worry about.
I guess I should sell all of my extra batteries because I only need one. I can even use that ONE battery for all of my cameras too since I only use one camera at a time anyway.
