Hello!
Long time lurker, first time posting.
I'm wondering if anyone has any info on a replacement for the SB600 flash? I'm upgrading from a SB400 and am considering a SB600 or SB900.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum MW.
I haven't heard of any recent SB700 rumors. We've all been waiting for an update to the SB600 for many years now. This time last year the rumors were strong of an SB700 but nothing happened. All is quiet so far this year. Though I guess a new flash could be announced with a D90 replacement and that's expected sometime in summer.
Ooooooo. SB700 rumors !! Drive me crazy....... still waiting, and waiting, and waiting
Ok, thanks!

I have been waiting on a sb-700 for almost a year now, but after some discussion on other threads here i decided it was not worth the wait. So i currently have a flash on the way.
The consensus is the the sb-700 will have a much better UI(like the SB-900). Also it might use those fancy chipped gels the sb-900 has, since they make nikon A LOT of money. But its power, size and other functions will probably not change much, if at all.
SO realistically, if you are willing to study the manual for a bit to figure out how all the functions work, get a sb-600 now.
Your photography will not benefit greatly from the wait.
Though all this is moot if you are considering a Sb-900. If it's in your budget and you are willing to deal with the increased size and weight, then go for that.
If you need a flash unit now, just get the current model. Chances are that it won't be that much better.
I sure as hell wouldn't wait a year or 6months for the new model.
MW - I noted a few weeks ago that I had given up waiting on the SB700 (for now), as I needed another secondary flash. Bought the SB600. The menu isn't that hard to learn, although the SB900 GUI would certainly be nice. The SB600 plays well with SB800s and SB900s. If I was looking for my first Nikon CLS flash, I would probably get the SB900 now. The only drawback I find with the SB900 is the size. (Weight and "overheating" is not a problem for me.)
How about the SB800 then?
Thanks for the replies everyone!

I'm currently shooting with a D300S and using my SB400 (which I had used with a D40X. I feel that with the kind of shots I take, I need a more powerful flash. After reading a few reviews, many mentioned the huge size of the SB900. I guess I need to go try them both at the store.

You could go for a SB600 or a SB800.
You could go for a SB600 or a SB800.
But it may be worth it to spring for the SB900, especially when it is said that they've made huge improvements in the UI.
if You don't work with remote flashes, I wouldn't go for sb900 - it's too big to carry unless You use it for pro work. I would rather go for sb600 or sb800 (may be hard to find).

Thanks, but they no longer sell the SB800 (I'm looking for new) so my choices would have to be a SB600 or 900.
Well, If the latest post by NR pans out, and we get a replacement for the SB600 soon, you can thank me - and you're welcome. Having held out for about a year to get the SB600 replacement to use as another secondary flash, I finally couldn't wait any more, and bought an SB600 just a few weeks ago. So now it looks like the replacement may be on the way.
Thanks warprints! Can you buy a D90 now too so we can get that replacement as well? :^)
I'll certainly take contributions toward buying one --- or maybe this jinx thing only works if I spend my own $$. So what will it be? You'd rather a D90 replacement or a D300s replacement, or maybe the D700 replacement? I think I'd be inclined to buy the D700 as I don't need another DX body.
Way to take one for the team, warprints.
