The new 5D2 firmware has been taken down after it broke the cameras it was suppose to update. This is for all of you who cry about Nikon not keeping up with canon firmware, and manual control, and 1080p and, blah, blah, blah. Oh and for all of you who want Nikon to do open source software. All it takes is for one poorly written app to turn you D4 into a brick. No thanks.

I saw that on Dpreview this morning, what a joke. How could they miss something like that in testing?

My heart (not my money) goes out to them. Makes me happier with my D90 day by day.

lol Niko that's a bit of a ridiculous chain of thoughts. Just because Canon screwed up doesn't mean I give nikon any less leeway with hurrying up and giving us full manual control in video and 1080p. I shouldn't have to complain, let's see Nikon take the lead once again and deliver.

Rushing poorly written firmware is what's ridiculous. As PB PM said above, how could canon have missed this?!

    bloody hell !

I just helped my friend to update the firmware for his 5dM2 this morning. Poor guy, he so exited yesterday when i told him that I have download the new firmware. He was waiting for the new firmware for ages.

God I feel so sorry, I hope we haven't messed up the camera. Any suggestion guys as to if the camera can at least shoot photographs as it did before? We didn't have that much time to test the camera after we updated the firmware. We have a video shoot tomorrow morning that we wanted to test the new firmware?

I would switch back to the previous firmware NOW! Who knows what other problems it could do especially if you have a shoot tomorrow. The fact that canon pulled the firmware so quickly, to me, shows the seriousness of the problem.

Thanx for the tip Niko !

I read the link that you post it and it looked to me that it was a problem with the audio.
As for the shoot tomorrow it's not a problem because we always shoot with 2 cameras just for the back up.

    thanx again

Your welcome :^) I hang around a lot of canon guys, or canuts as I like to call them, and they are pretty pissed with canon's recent quality control problems.

Niko if implemented properly badly written frimware need not "brick" a camera. Thats no excuse to not open source the firmware.

Any unforeseen mistake in code or more likely in the installation process has the potential to turn any electronic device into a brick.

If this had been a "third party" firmware then who would you blame for bricking your camera? The manufacturer (Nikon or canon) for not testing an open source firmware on their product or the developer for not fulfilling the firmware promise.

The majority of camera users just want to take pictures with their gear not spend time updating software. Just ask how many around here have actually updated the firmware on all of their cameras.

No I agree the untested firmware is fairly ridiculous and I would be very pissed if that'd happened to my camera.

However I think Nikon's lack of any details on any of the models due for replacement is quantifiable as losing "the lead". Canon messed up on a firmware update bigtime, however they still have 1080p and manual control, and pointless or not higher mp (although this doesn't bennefit me, it does bennefit others), and undeniably much more competitive pricing at the "entry" level.

although all of that is arguable I suppose and you know much more than I do, so maybe I'm just talking to talk. WHERE'S MY D7000 : )

Lol that's why I am no hero.

I let others brick their cameras, so I may later enjoy the fruits and all the sacrifices that made it possible for me. Thank you brave troopers, your bricked cameras didn't die in vain.

No but plenty of iphones were bricked with Apple updates due to "third party" "open" software

What exactly is your lure to open software bmxdad? What do you hope it'll give you that "normal" development won't? I just don't see the benefit. I think something like color profiles or curves is good enough for me. But do you really want to play Donkey Kong Jr on your D4?

I listed a few ideas in my other post that you kind of made fun off, but that is OK

    http://nikonrumors.com/forum/topic.php?id=1737

I just think that certain extra features will only get developed in an open software Environment, Nikon is just to set in their ways. Anyway we have what we have, and am not saying that Nikon is broken,

BTW Canon sure have had their share of screw ups with the 5D MKII
