canon wants to have it's own gTLD domain name. In other words instead of http://www.canon.com or http://www.canon.jp they want to have http://www.canon.canon
Nikon could do something like http://www.D800.nikon or http://www.iam.nikon

I think the proletariat would be confused with new top level domain names other than the norm

I think that is the case in a general sense, but it works in some specific situation.
such as bit.ly or the .tv or .fm domains.

As long as this is a humor thread.... I noted an ad for teaching a foreign language in 10 days on the link. It reminded me of about forty years ago when I was in Germany.... along the Moselle in Germany, after drinking wine in the afternoon, several beers in the evening, heck, by 9 PM I could speak fluent German.....why wait 10 days?
