I'm back from Japan! My trip wasn't nearly long enough. Anyway, here's a picture from a week ago of people wearing masks in the metro in Osaka. Swine flu scare made for some interesting photo ops.

Is there really so much pollution that they need to wear the masks?
Perhaps we launch a June thread for the photos?

"Swine flu scare made for some interesting photo ops"
Swine flu kills 200 people, everyone wears a mask. AIDS kills millions and no one wears a condom lol
Anyway, mb, nice shot. I wish I could see green like that here year round.
SeanM, great timing!

@monty - In Japan it's customary to wear a mask when you are sick in order to prevent the spreading of the disease in the crowded metro, etc. However every once in a while when there's a health scare, things reverse, and people start wearing them to avoid contracting the disease as well as spreading it. It doesn't really do much to avoid getting it, but they are pretty effective at lessening the spread of a disease.

This swine flu seems a bit overinflated. People die from ordinary flu and nobody pays any attention because it is old news. I remember when the SARS virus was going around there was an article about it being blown out of proportion and a comparison was brought with malaria that kills an astonishing number of people but there's nothing new or worth writing about in that.
The picture itself says a lot actually ... look at the discussion it brought along :D

I agree that swine flu has been blown way out of proportion, monty, however there was cause for alarm initially. When diseases make a jump between species as with swine flu, there's a period of rapid evolution where the virus/bacteria adjusts to the new host. During this time there was some likelihood that it could become a massive global killer far beyond the regular flu, such as the flu pandemic in 1918 (if i recall correctly) which killed somewhere between 20 and 100 million people. So at least there was some reason behind it.

@ tai : While I was in Japan there were many people wearing masks.. I guess its "normal" there these days. and tai.. You are right.. There is a danger that these new diseases can kill millions of people. And its a good idea to restrict the spread as much as possible. The reason it gets milder as time goes by is that the more virulent lines die off with the dead host. The longer we can contain it the milder the version that gets to the general population. ( this is my theory but i have a zoology degree though I am no zoologist! so It may be crap but it makes evolution sense to me!)

@monty11 - I know that we talked about extension rings; TC was a byproduct of a tired mind.
The best cure for swine flu is to pass on swine and stick to chicks, if you have to go better to go this way.Posted 3 years ago # -

If I may suggest that we all try to standardize on pictures of about 300 by 500 and posting a link to a larger image if anyone is interested.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Why that size? I think everyone uses a size that works well for them.

Thanks "mb" for posting that. Much appreciated.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I agree with mb - maybe not 300 by 500 for all pictures but let's say let it will be not wider than 500 when it's a landscape photo and not longer than 300 in portrait, it's only because it's hard to browse through this pictures when everyone are posting different sizes.

Here's one from one week ago in Uji Japan. Taken with my Nikon S10 P&S which I brought when I was using my Tokina 11-16mm so I wouldn't miss things I couldn't capture with the utra-wide. Click to embiggen, link below for related blog post.

I have a standard 19" display and the bookmaks bar open all the time and i have no scrolling with images up to 700 in width. (I'm just posting this 'cause I've so grown used to using 700px for my web scaledowns :P).
I wonder if the admin is on a sabbatical?
