I've been using my D3s for a month and a half now, and I recently realised something. The C-REM counter (number of shots available remaining in the buffer) seems to be stuck at 35 when I'm shooting at 14-bit lossless compressed RAW, even though the manual states that it should be 36. It remains at 35 even when I switch to 12-bit lossless compressed RAW, even though the manual says I should be able to shoot 43. Also, even with a completely empty card, the shot counter still reads 1. I'm using a SanDisk Extreme 400X 8GB CF card. What gives?

Did you format your memory card in camera or on a computer?

I'm not sure this will help, but did you try turning off long exposure noise reduction? On the D300 and the D90 having that setting on limits the number that fit in the buffer.

Gosh, can't believe I forgot about this thread.

I formatted the card on my PC, then formatted it again in the camera. Long exposure NR is off.

Custom setting D3 (max. continuous release) isn't set to 35, is it?

If not, these are the only other hints I could find in the footnote to the buffer size:

Maximum number of exposures that can be stored in memory buffer at ISO 200. Drops if Optimal quality is selected for JPEG compression, ISO sensitivity is set to Hi 0.3 or higher, High ISO NR is on when auto ISO sensitivity control is on or ISO sensitivity is over 3200, or long exposure noise reduction, Active D-Lighting, or image authentication is on.

I didn't mention the D-lighting because it doesn't affect the D90's max buffer, but I could have sworn it affected the D300 when I had it. Can anyone check that?

Max. continuous release is set to 130 (the highest allowed). I've tried shooting at ISO 200, both types of NR off, 14-bit lossless compressed RAW, Active D-Lighting off, image authentication off, on a formatted SanDisk Ultra II 2GB card. The 36 frames still elude me. What's more annoying is that the frame counter reads one, even on a card that's been formatted to death. It's not really a big problem to me (doesn't affect my shooting), it's just really confusing.

That is a mystery, rhodium. If you ever figure it out keep us posted. I'm interested to know why it does that, too.

    Edit: Disregard.
