Although this sounds odd. Why is there such a hype for HD video in a Nikon? While cool, the chances your video will be finally viewed In HD are very slim unless you only show your friends at your home computer. Broadcast standard is still 720p and anyone who has tried Hd in youtube has problems loading it and it still doesn't play it in full 1024 "HD"... Most people also don't have the software to fully or properly support and compress HD video anyway (Quicktime non pro, Windows movie maker, I movie, instead pf Final cut, Avaid, Premiere, After effects, Vegas...)

Mostly only the big media can use HD to it's full capacity...

Why do you guys on the forum think HD video will improve the Nikon, and what uses (that I am obviously not seeing) and possibilities do you see in it (cuz I know you must have a reason you want it so bad other than to pacify Canonites)?

First of all, why do you shoot RAW? why save as 14 bit?

While 1080p isn't common at the moment, it will increasingly common as time goes on.

First, 720p is HD but people want 1080p. I say people and I don't really mean me even though I do have software that handles 1080p (I don't have hardware to burn a blu-ray disc yet, but give me a year). 720p is plenty for how I use video—videos of the kids playing around outside, etc.—but I wouldn't complain about having 1080p video and I would use it. I also wouldn't complain about a new camera without 1080p, though. In fact, if I had to choose between having selectable 24fps and 30fps at 720p and having 1080p at 24fps only, there's no question I would rather have the 720.

Full HD and differnt frame rates are the holy grail for flmmakres. Of caures having all that is not going to make us better filmmakres but it gives us more to work on post production. Same as you do with picture when you crop to get some intersting details. IT is wxcatly the same for us as well when we talk about Full HD.

We are still using 720/ 576 as a standart in most broadcast station so having that extra resolution gives us the chance to crop that close shot that we fergot to take during the filming.

So for us filmmakres having our DSLR cameras shotting video and different frame rate is like you dad buying the first car on you're 18th birthaday.

OF caurse us, Nikon/filmmaker users get a bit angry why we didn't get the same video settings as canon has on our NIKON.

I don't think you will see real HD video before Sony has it, The Sensor is from Sony, maybe the current sensor design can simply not support full HD

Well bmxdad Sony is about to introduce the replacement of a700 which it will support full HD video so maybe Nikon is not that far.

One thing that I don't understand with Nikon is how come they can't fix the problem in D90 and D300s which is to fix the auto ISO and shutter. That can be fixed through firmware,

I can understand that their chip can't handle full HD, which again that is to do with the processor and not the chip. If the chip can handle 7 or 8 fps at full raster together with copies of jpeg surely it can handle the full HD at mjpeg compressed avi.

Also if they fixed the manual ISO in D3s through the firmware why cant they do the same thing for D90 and D300s? I am sure that a lot of people out there including me would surely appreciate. I am sure that the sensors in our cameras would handle that since the camera doesn't have to calculate more pixels.

What I would like for Nikon is to make their next firmwares open source like we have it for I phone where people cane write software programs for everybody's needs. I think somebody here in NR mention this before which I thought it's a brilliant idea.

I wasn't found of I phones until i so a program on the net that somebody with in the film industry has written a program to do storyboards from the pictures taken form location with the I phone.

Imagine now in our case what people can thing to do with our cameras. What's wrong with having a game of tetris when you are on a field waiting for the special moment?

Just found out that I did write some of my thoughts on the D4 thread.

Sorry bmxdad because you responded on that one as well.

Sometime I get internet drop outs just when you hit send post and I don't know if it went or not. Also I get lost reading almost every post so I sometime forget to whom I wrote and what.

Last week on NikonRumors website they posted a link that has left me in awe with what the Movie HD Video function on their cameras can do. Most of these videos were done with the D300s.

HI Bland !

Nikon D300s shoots amazing video. A week ago we shot a short film on a RED One and during the filming I was shooting some of the same shots form D300s and to be honest with you it looked identical. The only thing that D300s is missing is the manual control over ISO and shutter. If it had that it would of been nearly perfect.

Again a reason for an Open Software area in Nikon DSLR's. If Nikon don't want to make certain video software, other would step up and do it

I've been down on 1080p for quite some time now (as those of you who are regulars know full well), But now that Target is selling Blue-Ray players for $70 I've got to say the time is coming pretty soon.

So quick poll - How many of you out there own a Blue-Ray player, Blue Ray Burner, and 1080p Television? If you have all of the above, do you also shoot video?

Of the three, I've only got the TV part (which is kind of useless w/o the blue-ray player to be perfectly honest).

Now that the pricing is coming in-line, I'll probably pick up the rest of the set-up in the next year or two. I certainly wouldn't mind a Blue Ray burner for back-up purposes.

I have none of the above, Willis. But I can play 1080p on my computer and reading from a hard disk is fast enough. I still have a flat screen 23" CRT (standard def) that an HD upgrader gave me for free and don't see myself upgrading that anytime soon since I take pictures more often than I watch TV. Any new toy funds go to photography.

My first purchase out of those three you list will be a BD burner, for backup like you mentioned and for burning home video.

We don't even have a 720p TV, so I don't care about HD video, and DVDs are just fine in terms of video quality.

So, Rob, do you mean you don't care about watching HD video or you don't care about taking HD video or both? I sometimes watch videos of my older son taken with my first camcorder and wish I had HD back then.

Valon has a good point about having room to crop and pan in post. With 1080p, you could crop to 720 and still have a comfortable amount of space to work with.

I never thought about cropping in video... that makes reasonably good sense.

As for consumption of HD video, it seems like we just aren't quite there yet in terms of bandwidth. Of course we can film and watch HD video on our personal comuters, but that's about it.

Downloading HD video, in America at least, isn't quite ready for prime time. My computer already tends to balk at YouTube's HD content. And I wouldn't even want to think about uploading it. Physical distribution also is tough, because there isn't a ubiquitous standard to distribute on. We still have customers who ask for their photos on CDR because their computers don't do DVD (so far nobody has asked for it on 1.4 inch floppy LOL).

You guys haven't mentioned the computing power you need to mess around with HD video files. Good luck rendering a crop on an hour worth of 1080p video.

You're right about that, Niko. But if you never captured it, you could never have the chance to play around with it, and computers haven't been getting much slower. ;-)

10 years ago people would have said working with 25MP still files would be outside of an average consumer's computing budget.

Yeah but you guys are talking about what you need besides a New HDTV, B-R player, and B-R ray burner. Well you also need a fast computer processor, lots of RAM, and a fast graphics card. Remember RAW HD files are coming soon too so one Blue-Ray disc or 1TB harddrive isn't going to be a lot of storage space anymore.

That is correct if it was 10bit uncompressed full HD but motion jpeg avi from NIkon and Quicktime movie of Canon are ok. Both of them are compressed files so any computer can handle, all you have to do is trans-code them to other ProRes or whatever format is out there for premier and you are good to go. It's not going to be same as professional HD video cameras but the look that you get form the DSLRs is identical to any academy frame sensor professional digital cameras.

So all the fuss about DSLR is getting that depth of field look and the use of different lenses. Do do that with 1/3 and 2/3 chip video cameras you need to place the camera 10meters back from you're subject and zoom in.

I don't mind watching HD video, but if I am watching TV I cannot see the difference on our old 480p CRT TV. If I watch on my computer I like DVD quality or 720p, but 1080p isn't a requirement. I thought the 720p output from the D90 was fine when I had one. I think being able to make short video clips is the only thing I miss about having the D300.

Niko, you don't need a very good graphics card to watch HD video. A basic Intel IGP can play 1080p without too much trouble. An entry level card $50-60 is more than enough to watch 1080p, without using the CPU at all.

I have a PS3 and a Sony HD TV that can go to 720p or 1080i. Not the greatest, but it was the top of the line 50 inch plasma in 2004.

I think Niko was talking about editing HD video, not playing it. But I have done 30-minute HD renders on even my machine (which is not cutting edge: 2.33GHz core 2 duo with 2 GB of RAM) and it's actually not awful. I wouldn't sit and watch it rendering, but you could just leave it rendering overnight.

Any computer with a Core 2 Duo and a mid-range graphics card made in the last two years should be fine for basic video editing. Now if you want to work in Final Cut Pro...
