I am looking at purchasing a D90 ... I can get the body and kit lens (18-105mm) for $1030 or I could get the (24-120mm) for $1189. Which lens would you choose. Thanks for your input and insight!
Which lens would you choose 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF or the 18-105mm kit lens ?

D90 18-105mm kit is better value IMHO.

For a D90, I would stick with the 18-105, for one thing, you might find yourself wanting more of a wide angle than the 24-120 allows; even if you move to full frame in the relatively near future, the 18-105 is cheap and I doubt you will lose a significant amount of money on it when you upgrade.
Also, according to the reviews up on slrgear.com the 18-105 seems like a sharper lens than the 24-120.
Granted, for $150 you do get a more futureproof lens; but, I think I'd be more happy using that money to get either 35 1.8dx, or a 50 1.8, or putting it towards a flash.Posted 3 years ago # -

Thanks for your input and insight! If intended to get a second lens like the 12-24mm F4 or 10-24mm DX wide angel lenses, the 24-120mm fits with them rather well. The build quality of the 24-120mm is also superior.

I personally would buy the AS-S 24-120mm VR over the AF-S 18-105mm lens for the following reasons:
1. The build quality is better, specifically the lens mount. The 18-105mm has a plastic mount and the 24-120mm lens has a metal mount as all of the better Nikon lenses have. I have heard of instances where the lens can break off from the mount when on the camera. I think that this has occured when it has bumbed just right against something, but this does not happen with the metal mount lenses.
2. The 24-120mm lens has a distance scale and the 18-105mm lens does not.
3. If you ever do upgrade to a full frame camera the 24-120mm lens will work with it.
4. There are a number of complaints by others regarding the 24-120mm lens, but it is the kit lens that Nikon provides with the D700.
5. My wife has a 24-120mm lens that she uses on her D60 and she very seldom takes it off. I was able to find another one for an excellent price so we now have two and I use the other one on a D300.Good luck with your decision making.

For the heck of it I am posting the well loved Ken Rockwell opinion on the 24-120mm mmhttp://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/24120vr.htm...

KR also believes that the 18-200mm VR is the best lens Nikon has ever made, that the D40 is the best DSLR ever made, and that digital cameras will be replaced by film cameras in the future.

I know... I thought a little humor wouldn't hurt :)

It was funny, but some people might take his advice seriously, if they don't know the whole story. ;-)

I have had a look through the 18-105 VR .. its a nice lense. There is rumor that the 24-120 will be replaced soon(Not that it matters to you). I have not looked through the 24-120 but the reviews on it are mixed to bad on DX and mixed to ok on FX. I would go with the 18-105 for the D90. 18 is a nice focal length for the DX format. Being a new user you are unlikely to bash your lens around so the non metal mount should not be a concern.
However, if you have the option I would suggest you look into the 16-85, instead of either these 2 lenses. also consider the new sigma 17-70 F2.8-F4 OS
