I am upgrading to FX, just wondering what you all thought, would you ditch your DX camera gear or just hang on to it? I have a D80, 50mm 1.8 and 18-200mm VR.
Would you sell your D80 and DX gear

Well the 50 will work on full frame, so keep that.
It really depends. You might like the idea of traveling with the D80 and the 18-200 rather than a heavy FX setup. You should be able to get close to $1000, maybe more if you are patient for what you have now, though, so you have to decide how relevant that is to you.

Sell it while it still has some value. Reinvest the money in more gear.

Keep it as a backup. Anything can happen (believe me I know) and the last thing you want is to be stuck without a camera for 2 weeks).

YES

Keep it, you'll want something small a light to have when you don't want to lug your FX camera around, trust me.

Keep it as a backup.

Depends... I have a similar setup and will keep most but sell some lenses. The D80 is now also monetarely worthless it doesnt limit its use in worse or hazardous conditions. Which is nice.
Compared to FX prices there is also temptation to sell the D80 and buy a D90 to replace it as such travel kit (something like 400e, when forthcoming FX will be closer to 3000e).
I would probably do this if this was not my first DSLR, I might just keep it on my bookshelf for memories sake.Posted 3 years ago # -

I would keep it as a backup camera and welcome to the forum!

I think keeping it makes sense, I probably can't get much for it..

Good choice, I made the mistake of selling my D80, only got $400 for it and that was last summer.

If you can afford it keep it definitely ... D80 plus 18-200 is a great walk around set ...

If you can, I'd keep it as a backup. That 18-200mm Vr is a great lens and the D80 is also wonderful. DX is great for telephoto as you get more reach with the crop factor. For travel, DX gear is also lighter. When you trade gear in you take a huge hit price wise so often it is better to hold onto it. Your 50mm 1.8 is sweet on an FX body.
Welcome to the forum! ^^

I was in a similar situation. I had a D80 with quite a few DX lenses, and I was waiting to switch to the D700 replacement. But as my needs for MP grew and grew, I found it was actually very cheap to upgrade to a used D90. I sold my D80 with a kit lens for 550, and I picked up a D90 with the same kit lens for 700. I know when the D700 replacement comes out, I can easily sell my D90 for the price I paid, so no money lost.

Hey MaxiVisVires your case is a perfect example of why you would sell your gear. The D90 was the refresh of the D80 so if it was done early on enough, then less money would be lost. The problem Kamerad has is that he is getting into FX like I did last year. The D80 is a wonderful camera but I had very little cash so I had no choice but to trade in my gear for the D700. Luckily I already had the glass ready, but even now I'd love to have that second DX body for telephoto. Thats why if you can keep the D80, and don't move it for $300-$400 you'll get its worth still as a second body.

Yea for $400-$300 its pointless, rather donate it to some kid trying to get a start in photography for that money, keeping it as my #2 is what I will do... of course now I am deciding should I get a D700 or a used D3, not sure I would use video of a D3s, and some of the D3 prices I see are pretty good, and the D3 has a little more to offer than the D700, damn how I hate choices..than again I could wait longer for the D700 update and get a used D700..

Last year they were selling for an average of $800 I think the hype for a rumored DSLR drove the value of it down...

Yes thats true the D3 has really come down in price. The sensors are esentially the same as the body build with the D700 and D3. I like the D700 because you get the sensor cleaner which at least removes lint etc. There should be some nice deals on the D700 right now if you look hard enough. If you shoot action at all you should go with the D3.
