That's old news kyoshi. RED has been promising these cameras for over a year already and have yet to show anything but fancy computer drawings and hollow plastic prototypes.
actually niko thats false, Red has the epics already out in the field for testing and they have shown working bodies. The next film Im slated to work on this year will be shot on Epic. They get a few out in the field to bug test first and will be available to purchase this summer/fall. But I agree it has taken them an awful long time to get these cameras out.
They first revealed their plans in 2008! So I would hope that they finally have a working prototype!
Imagine how many haters would be throwing stones at Nikon if they promised us a camera in 2008 and in 2010 they were still working on field testing prototypes and not even preproduction models. RED Epic Fail!
well even though it it has taken a long time I highly doubt it is a fail also I know that Shutter island used a red one with the new sensors in it for the movie. The shots with Leo in the dark cell lighting a cigar using natural light, the match and high ISO with no grain is something I would call nothing short of amazing. Getting 180FPS as new redcode with all the settings as a raw still file is also amazing. They are changing the industry and even though I still wont own one and will rather save up to get the D3S replacement at some point I think its going to be amazing to work with the camera and footage. So in short this is still going to rock the world when it comes out. (any lenses, 4K, touch screen lcd, wireless redmote controls, touch screen follow focus at under 10000 for a full functioning system...still pretty awesome.
Yes but they originally said it would be a DSLR "killer". Meaning they would be killing Nikon and canon cameras, but the price of their 35mm "brain" is closer to $30,000! And being a modular system the entire package will likely be much more than that. The under "$10,000USD" complete system you speak of is for the fixed lens camera with a 2/3 sized sensor.
These cameras are meant for commercial purposes and not "casual" amateur or advanced enthusiast use. In other words you're not going to buy one of these cameras to shoot a vacation or birthday party with. The Nikon D3S, D700, or canon 5D2 are priced "low" enough that people can use those cameras for such purposes. Plus Nikon and canon are rumored to be working on RAW video for future cameras.
Not to mention the industrial type of computing power and storage space you will need to process hours of 4 and 5K RAW video! That will require an equally large $$$ investment !
No the 10000 system I speak of is a 2/3 sensor interchangeable lens complete system with batteries, lcd, redmote, cf card slots, cf cards etc. Also their mini prime lenses are outstanding. Its all listed on their site not all that hard to find. http://red.cachefly.net/N30/Nov30th.jpg
I work with red files, I have 8TB of hard drive space raided in a dual quad core system with 16G or ram. I work on these films day in and day out I know what im talking about and what to expect. I recently worked on Invictus, Ive also worked worked with R3D files on the "shine of rainbows" feature and the storage is much less then the DPX and EXR files we used for Clints film. Im not looking for a consumer camera, why would a consumer camera be 4k anyways "I and many others" want what the $200 000 cameras could do for film in a smaller more affordable package for the indie film maker.
Oh and talk about computing power at work I was using a computer with 32 CPU's, 128G of ram and a quadro 5700 for crowd sims and it was still SLOW.
Hey I wasn't meaning to start an heated argument. I just stumbled across this with the Idea that this might be a camera that changes the tone of the industry if it caught on in the pro end. There isn't the possibility of it being a Dslr "killer" as Niko just stated, but there is the possibility how it will effect the way Dslr's are thought out if it came out and caught on...

If RED ever gets these cameras out they will certainly be put to good use by those who can afford to buy or rent them. However they are a bit like your Uncle Rico. Every year he keeps promising to take you to Disneyland but never does.
This technology is cool and exciting now because it doesn't exist yet. Once Nikon, canon, and even Sony start making similar cameras (minus the modular design that is) how can RED compete at those prices?
