Yes the flash has certain duration depending on power, flash model etc, but right now with a mechanical shutter you can shoot sports properly at max 1/320, with electronic shutter you can have max flash power at 1/1000 or faster and that makes a big difference in sports

That is what those battery packs are made for anyway. A control from the "D4" could allow you to control more powerful flashes from the camera while limiting certain options to an external Nikon power source that can handle the flash unit.

I said unrealistic, because every Pro DSLR Nikon has released has a built in grip, and because I think it is unlikely that the grip will be removed. Not having a built in grip creates more chances for dust and water to get into the system, making it less appealing to pro photographers, which I cannot see Nikon wanting to do. I think it is far more likely that we'll see the D3s sensor in the D700 successor, than we are to see the D4 without a built in grip.

The main reason Not to remove the grip is just the power issue. I'm not saying that they should remove the grip from the D# series, Im saying they should make the D700 successor take batteries that have more juice (I fully doubt its gonna happen) so that It can do what the D3 can, just in a smaller package. The grip makes the D700 larger than the D3 anyway...

Yup, the grip does add a lot of bulk. The D300 with grip is as big as the D3, but then again I like the grip, most of the time, because I enjoy vertical shooting.

There is no doubt that the D700 successor will have a better sensor, and you might see a frame rate boot too, like the D300s did.

Hopefully.

It would also be nice (on the D4) to have a identical power switch on the grip side too. It would allow for a quick setup on a vertical shot...

I just want Nikon to at least change their Video format. M-Jpeg avi is just terrible. I dont even need 1080P just need quicktime with H264 or better. But 1080P with a quicktime lossless codec would be nice because I want to shoot a short film without buying a red right now.

It would be nice if they did change from avi to movie to but as far as for compression goes I thing is difficult Nikon to fix. The reason is that you can only get that much from a small body. Remember professional video cameras are 5 times bigger and have different processors which they can handle uncompressed video. Maybe in the near future they can do it but as for the moment it would be nice if Nikon can master the manual control in D-movie mode. I know they did with D3s but even with that camera is not that straight forward.

Somebody here not long ago mention the idea for NIkon to have their firmware as an open source similar to what I Phone offers where different users write programs for different circumstances. I think that would be a great idea for Nikon to look in to it and see if they can develop it further. I personally would pay extra cash for a firmware that can fix the problem in my camera for D-movie. This way I thing all of us would be happy and not get in each others way.

Open Software does have issues, such as the ability of not so nice people to introduce viruses.

Or have an opensource platform that can be submitted to an in-house developer and then converted into a in-house plugin

Do like Apple, 100.000 apps so far, is there problems with viruses etc, not likely

It would really make it interesting to be able to add neat features to your camera

Do like Apple, you mean safety through obscurity/low market share (7.2% of the PC market in February)? I doubt that would work well for Nikon's profit margin.

I bought my I Phone because of the storyboard program that I downloaded for I tones.
I payed all in total 550 euros. I was happy with my fake Nokia chines dual Sim copy but because of the storyboard program I bought I phone.

Imagine how much more money NIkon could earn form open source firmware. How many people would spend few extra money to get the firmware for their needs.

I agree, Valon. There are a lot of people who would be willing to develop for an open-source camera firmware, and there are lots of things that are crippled by software (I'm sure Nikon realizes this and keeps it that way to protect their pricing structure, so I don't think it's happening anytime soon).

Yes but that 7.2% has a very solid profit margin for Apple, The Open Software for Nikon is not about making money from selling the software but about making the DSLR's more desirable to have, just like the Iphone. Read this from Thom Hogan if you have not done so already

Apple has high profit margins because they overprice most of their products, doesn't stop me from buying some of them, but you do have to keep that in mind. Nikon cannot afford to become Leica, or in other words a premium brand, like Apple.

I completely agree, Pete. If I know developer nerds (and I know some personally) they would buy a Nikon DSLR just to see what they could do with it if Nikon opened up the firmware (instant market expansion). Why I don't think Nikon will do it is because right now they have an interest in keeping some features off of their low-end models. They have to justify the premium charged for the high-end models, and artificially crippling the low-end models in software is an easy way to do it while keeping up the IQ by putting the high-end sensors in them.

But if they sold only the higher-end models with open-source firmware and released a development kit for it then it could keep everyone happy. A consumer could decide if they're willing or not willing to pay the extra money for the open-source feature. The best thing is that it could turn into a whole lot of new features that no one had even thought of when the camera came out—some of which Nikon could then easily port to the firmware of the low-end cameras and sell them as features that beat the competition's offerings at the same price. All of this would be free (or cheap) software development for Nikon and it would also encourage innovation.

Yes Jonny should be only in D300s and up models, and it could actual help them sell more highend models. There are so many features that could be thought off

- PLEASE NIKON, MOVE AWAY LV BUTTON FROM SOUND RECORDING BUTTON!!

- 2 stop better in Noise.
- Better Auto Focus, more coverage for FX user.
- Better Cross-type AF points. (as D2)
- A huge better in Dynamic Range.
- 12 Megapixels but 16-bit NEF.
- Interchangeable view finder can share with D5.
- Full HD

- MH-24 (Dual slot, supplied), MH-25 (Single slot, optional) Thin and Small Charger.

- In camera VR

16bit? I don't think most people take full advantage of 14bit NEFs yet, and it would take a lot more in camera CPU power, which could have a less than ideal impact on battery life. I don't think staying with 12MP is an option for the D4, if they don't step up the MP to at least 16MP, they will loose pro customers.

I know older pro SLRs had interchangeable viewfinders, but I never figured out why someone would want that and still don't. Full HD is almost a given, Nikon would be very silly not to have 1080p in their next generation cameras.

A wider AF area, and more cross type sensors would be great. I really wish Nikon didn't cram all the cross type sensors in the middle, spread them out a little!

I don't know that there's an advantage to 16 bit, anyway. You're limited to fewer than 16 bits of dynamic range in your sensor by noise sources that aren't going to go away anytime (or anytime soon?). I'd rather have more megapixels, too. Not that I'm complaining about 12...
