Great setup! i have the 24-70 on my D3 and its purely amazing. Its almost TOO much for me. Even tho i love it :). Go for it! If its your thought of the d700 going to be replaced soon. Its going to be a higher price plus will take months of waiting to get. Also i have heard rumors of in the future of VR on the 24-70. It would be amazing to have on that lens. But the value of that lens will hold till then if you would like to upgrade.
Thought about adding the battery pack yet? :)
You wont regreat getting it.
I just purchased the old nikkor 70-200. I still need to get an sb-900 or sb-600, the MB-10, and a 50mm or 85mm prime. And, I'll be ready for weddings. At least equipment-wise.
Do it. I have the 24-70 on my D700. Love it. Wickedly sharp. I must have picked that up from Moose. ;).
Anyway, it's a great combination. All you need after this is the 14-24 f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8 VRII.
Have you made the purchase yet of the d700 24-70 along with the 70-200?
The old 70-200 is pretty nice. I am about to upgrade mine for the newer one just because of the less fall out on FX while my 70-200 holds its value.
Have you thought about getting a second body in the future?
Well, one step at a time. I'm actually sellign my d40x to help finance this purchase. I know I'll need a 2nd body for back-up at weddings. But I can borrow a friends D200 for that.
I purchased the old Nikkor 70-200 on ebay. Should get it this week.
That's great, Jeff. Good luck with your new toys!
DON'T DO IT!!!! The D800 will be announced next week! Sorry just kidding :^)
Seriously though, if you need us to justify such a big purchase for you than to me that means you don't really need a D700 and/or you are stretching your budget way too far.
Here is my jsutification for budget.
#1 Get what I think will do the job I want to do.
#2 Get what I think I'll be happy with for several years.
#3 I have a set goal of work and earnings. I'll do a Cost Benefit Analysis at that point and decide whether to keep or unload what I've purchased.
I'll lose some if I sell, but at least the glass will hold fairly steady for another year.
The purchase question was not aimed so much at the cost... but more like what you just mentioned... this just in ... new D800!!! Ha! and ... "oh, I have that combo, not what I thought it would be... etc."
I say do it for SURE!
The new model, probably a D700s, will be back up at $2999 for a year, then down to $2699, and eventually at the price we're at with the D700 right now, which is amazingly cheap with the combo deal.
Also, the D800/900 combo is a TOTALLY different market, with high MPx and not nearly as nice noise control as the D3s sensor (which will likely end up in the D700s).
Unless you need video, I say do it!
I'm waiting for another 2 years, can't justify it with my D200 body doing well, and would rather get the glass. . .
A "D800" will happen this year.
Yup, and I'm sure it will cost at least $3000 when it comes too, while the D700 costs around $2400. I can could pickup a flash and some memory cards with that much money.
I just gave up playing the waiting game on an SB700 - I needed another secondary flash (trying to catch up to Joe McNally - it'll never happen) - and bought an SB600. I now fully expect the SB700 to be announced next week !!
Hey, that's how life is. If you're happy with what you're ordering, go for it. The D800 will be old within a year or so of it's release. As soon as it comes out, we'll be whining about how long it's taking for the D800x or D900 to be released. Go for it. No regrets !! Take pictures NOW, why wait !!
Excellent set-up. The D700 is probably Nikon's best value (the D90 is nice too) and the 24-70 is very useful.
if there would be any logic with buying stuff, I would stick with my Minolta Dynax 505si - fortunately there's no logic (at least not all the times), You gonna like Your purchase Jeff
Hi Jeff, Just get that D700 and enjoy it for as long as it delivers the quality you want. Then for mental safety reasons avoid places like NR and other online camera forums, they are just going to drive you crazy with what you could/should have done.
Pete
BTW you could also just hang around here and have fun with what the future will or will not give us. I think you will be smitten with NAS like the rest of us and don't forget to share some of your photos
Done.
:-)
I am thinking about buying the D700 as well, maybe the 2 combo 24-70 and 70-200.. the combo discounts look awful enticing...sucks how BH doesnt have double combo on their website
