When you say that the Nikon 300VR passed your D3x test, which version is that, the f/2.8 or the F/4 AFS?
Posted 4 years ago # -
There is only 300/2,8 VR today on the market. Hope to see 300/4 VR soon. Nobody knows...

Right you are. My point is that the 2.8 VR 300 is, for me at least, too heavy (6.3 lbs) to hike far with, while the 300 F/4 AFS is about half that weight (3.1 lbs), which is heavy enough as it is, plus the D3x, Gitzo, other lenses, bag o' stuff, etc.

Indeed.

I am curious how your lens testing is coming for the D3x. So far, the only lens that seems about perfect is the Voigtlander APO Lanthar 125 f-2.5. The Nikon 300mm f-4 ED AF-S is ok, but not stellar. Same for the Nikon 70-200mm. I am about to check out the Nikon 14-24mm f-2.8 lens.
What other lenses do you find stellar on the D3x. I don't check this forum that often, so fee free to email me directly at
Thanks,
Michael

This is an old thread
The D3x gets very little mention on this forum
Does any one else use one
My current project is urban landscapes, some of which, (if I am lucky) will be be made into large prints / wall artI am currently using a D700

for landscapes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hasselblad of Mamiya medium format
but this is a Nikon forum

A H4D-40 would be nice but with 3 lenes over £20,000. Out of my price range. No, I am not going back to film

Don't forget there is the 40mp Pentax 645D medium format option as well it's also quite cheap at just 10 grand haha just...I have heard this camera is great though. The question is who would buy this over the D3X or the D4/ D700, D3s refreshes? 40mp medium format so maybe many people would.

yes, I have been looking at the pentax and the price is tempting [smile]
the advantages of the medium format over the D3/4 FX is so great for landscapes, macro and portrait it is the dream camera for that type of photography.
however, you will still need a modern DSLR for the advantages they have. [too many to list] and that is where the nikon comes in.
that pentax is looking mighty tempting though when you consider the prices of the big two.
well it all begins with a dream.

But the thing is how is the lens selection on the Pentax?
I don't think it's as broad as Nikon's.

agreed
but remember for the type of photography you will be doing, the lenses available should be good enough.
also, do not forget the opposite of crop factor, don't know the name, therefore 50mm is realy fortysomething.
55mm for people
35/24 mm for landscapes ?
and of course they have macro lenses, some 300s too, but I would prefer a Nikon DSLR for the long and fast work.

coincidentally I have just been reading about the 645D. it has a "crop" medium format not the full size, but it still looks very good for various tasks. I recommend reading this link
(or google Pentax 645D Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III Comparison)
which is kind of the same as the options you are looking at.
if I was shooting lanscapes I would go for the 645D or a "real" medium format with digi back if that was an option. The 40Mp is vastly more than even the next gen Dslrs and you won't get that dynamic range from a Fx sensor until they go 16bit (by which time pentax will have upgraded)

Yes its funny a lot of people get it done with just the kit lens that comes with the 645D. You know what happens though remember getting the Nikon body with the 18-55 kit lens and look what happens? 6 lenses and over 5 grand later...
