Proudgeek, that is a Hummingbird Hawk Moth. A lot of fun to chase around with a macro lens.

Just noticed this series was shot "up the road" (well, 60 miles or so) from where I am!
Nice, it was a good night to get out as you can tell by everybody wearing shorts.

I finally found something slower than me. I was able to sneak up on him before he dove into the water. Still needed the 70-300 to get him though.
Some very special images on pad lately. The holidays will provide some more great shots, I'm looking forward to them.

A few hours early because of early field work, but hopefully I will stabilize with posting in the mornings before work! I've uploaded a month's worth of B&W prints, so that buys me some time to get other matters in order while I can't commit to extensive processing (and fall further behind again). A while ago I posted a digital version of this, taken with my D7000. That was the best out of several frames I shot with that camera. This is the one frame I shot on my F5.
The location is the Quaker Bridge in the NJ Pinelands. The Quakers used to have an annual meeting in Tuckerton, NJ back in the 1800s. The Tuckerton Stage Road required fording this water, and I guess there were some poor swimmers in the crowd and some were lost every year to this crossing. The original bridge was built to prevent this loss of life, and was replaced twice to reach its current iteration. To take this shot, I was laying prone on the bridge deck.
I chose my AF 50mm f/1.8D as it was the only one I could poke through the metal grate. This print was my first try at "split toning" - using a lower contrast filter to build density in the highlights, and a higher contrast filter to build density in the shadows without adding too much density to the highlights. In this case, I also used the highest contrast filter to make sure the shadows were separated from the blacks. (Density here refers to the buildup of silver on the paper, with less or no density giving white and the most density giving black.)

So very many nice shots here...El_Pick & Greybagel....nice special effects.
I think I need to get back out as I am certain some are getting tired of this series.

Well, for one, I do not get tired of any of these images. I look at them all and ask myself what could I have done here? What story would I want to tell about this subject and how would I do it?
So, msmoto and others, keep them coming whether they are portraits, fire engines, birds, skyscrapers, landscapes, dogs, cats, other critters, cameras, still lifes or even turtles!Posted 5 months ago # -

La Tijuca National Park is located in the mountains next to Rio de Janeiro. It is actually surrounded by the city. The mountains are steep and heavily forested, but surprisingly, the forests are second growth. In the early 19th century, these mountains were occupied by coffee farms, and in 1861 the farms were all purchased and the land was allowed to return to its "normal" state.
