Continuing to be about black and white. Longing to return to Paris for another visit. In the meantime, I present a salt shaker on the kitchen counter.

Another great day of images! Hope your not getting sick of my Owls. I finally got a barred owl in some light this morning...

One more shot of a century-old statue in snow . . .

... and I am NOT sick and tired of owls, flowing water, or dramatic South-West scenery. The last two pages contained many gems.

@msmoto - I was super impressed at how you bounced light under the brim of his cap until I noticed it is a translucent cap :D Still, nice lighting! I think a white background, a la Rifqi, might balance better with with the feel of the light on his face. I've enjoyed your recent portrait work, keep it up!

Was out of action for a couple of days and missed a lot of great shots here on PAD.
My first for December. ISO 12600, with a Sigma 150 - 500. While I am not really happy with the sharpness and built quality of this lense, i do like the scene.

@greybagel, coastal, treckie - super shots.
Everyone else also, I should actually just write the names of everybody who posted in December. My contribution for today, continuing my pet photo concept:

Cropped a bit. Applied a reverse S curve in Viveza and lightened the foreground slightly in Color Efex.Posted 5 months ago # -
16mp in the FX D4 sensor seems to provide all the resolution anyone should need.

My last basketball shot and the one below were both shot at 1/320th of a second. Last time 1/200th was enough to freeze the face but not the ball. This time 1/200th is enough to freeze the ball but not quite the face. I conclude 1/200th is usable but borderline. It is better to shoot action at higher a shutter speed but the light often then forces you into intolerable ISO range.

In action sports, the photo is almost always about the people and not the other aspects. Thus, I would shoot to have the face in focus and follow it with the focus point in the viewfinder.

Good idea to focus on the face but some technical difficulties:
1: You don't know which player will ultimately be the one to shoot the ball, it keeps getting tossed all over the court before someone takes a shot. You cannot pick the "right" face until the last second, or fraction of a second and then it is too late.
2. The action happens so fast you don't have time to move one single focus point around to rest on the face of the person who takes the shot and by the time you have placed the focus spot on a players face the person has moved or thrown the ball to someone else anyway.
3. Auto focus may, or many not, select the "right" player. It could select a closer player who it guarding the player with the ball.
5. I have been trying dynamic 9 or dynamic 21 to narrow my autofocus area so it better picks up just one player.
I don't mean to start a thread here, just to illustrate difficulties. Perhaps someone who has a lot of experience in sports photography could start a thread and people can then explain what works for them in a situation where you have 5 guys all wearing essentially the same color and pattern jerseys and their faces are changing from front to back to side to side making any pattern inconsistent for 3D tracking.

Its been difficult to post the last several weeks because of a variety of reasons. Last week I was in Brazil to work with national park managers on some challenges they face. So thought I would post some snap shots of the areas I visited.

Here is a concert shot shooting a conductor who is of course wearing a black suit, against a black back drop in a dark concert hall...

Really enjoying the variety of images here. Sports, bandleaders, animals, portraits, & landscapes. All good.
@ MihaiCH, I believe I read on this board a long time ago where someone mentioned keeping a small whistle in his/her camera bag. Whenever they'd take a pic of a dog a mild blow of the whistle would often cause the dog to make a funny expression while looking at the camera. For that reason I've wanted to put a whistle in my bag but never have so far. Best of luck to you.Posted 5 months ago # -
