Though I would think it's one of the recent COOLPIXes? The P100 perhaps?

Nope, P100 has smaller sensor and is not the same class.

The P100 and the G11 are both 10mp
What about the Nikon S8000 (14mp)then?

P100 has 1/2.3 inch, Canon G11 and S90 1/1.7 (so is P6000).

Yeah but sensor size isn't as important in a point & shoot. I seriously doubt .6 makes a difference in image quality. They are both still small.

I am the Amateur. So I read but I am not really excited after I read it. I really want to hear they release a new dSLR body.

Thanks chinese_ys! So it looks like the "P7000" is on it's way next week after all (March8th). The G11 is no longer relevant IMHO so if Nikon is just barely going to catch up to the G11 then that's not exciting news because everyone else has moved on to EVIL cameras.
A Nikon EVIL camera will NOT be a direct competitor to the G11 so we can rule that announcement out for next week. The only way Nikon can "save face" is if they announce something like the new Samsung TL500. Or if they put a 12mp APS-C sized sensor in a COOLPIX like the Leica X1 but at a much cheaper price. Then "I am Interested" :^)

I suppose what must be must be.
but no! march 8th I will hopefully be up in the mountains of Boulder, CO shooting at night, so I can't be too disappointed. :)

They are both still small.It makes the same difference as FX to DX and it is the reason why LX3, G11, S90 and others all have incomparably better IQ and cost twice as much as lower class P&S.

oh I guess they could be this camera and then the other announcement could be the "I am: nikon" relaunch thing.

We have 8 cards right? And we have Coolpix S8000 so unfortunately this is it I think.
