I thought this would be a fun common question... What is the average amount of lenses you keep in your bag and why? Also how many lenses do you own in contrast with the amount that you keep in your bag... I have 6, mostly 2.8's. 2 macros, 1 mid tele-zoom, a 50mm prime pocket lens, a wide to mid, and a 10.5mm. That excludes 4-6 (too lazy to look) shelf lenses
How many...

Two if even. I barely carry them all out with me because I just got a bag. So my average number of lenses = 1. :D
That makes my life so easy- zoom or prime? Will I be shooting deadly animals (lions) or my little cousins? Zoom it is for both! :D

3 out of 4, 4 out of 4, and sometimes 5 out of 4 (I'm almost constantly borrowing either a 60mm macro, tamron 90mm macro, or 18-105 from my dad). It's just a matter of whether I want to carry around my 70-200 2.8. Normally though, it's a 17-50 2.8, 35 1.8, 50 1.8.
edit: for paid shoots, I always have all my lenses as my budget so far hasn't let me buy lenses I won't use. :-( Someday, though...Posted 3 years ago # -

one or two maximum if I'm on the move. something like a 35/2 and a 105/2.5 is pretty standard for me. or a 18-35 and 105/2.5 or 20/3.5 and 85/1.4
I may also just take one of the above and roll with it.
in the studio, I lay out everything I might possibly want on a rolling cart, so about ten.

I always carry my 16-85. I usually add the 70-300 VR and 10-24 plus a macro. If I don't plan on using the macro I carry the 60mm, if I do plan on using it I carry the 105. Then I add my 35/1.8 and/or 10.5/2.8 if I think they might be needed. If I'm hiking I add a filter pack and tripod, if I plan to be inside much I might add my SB-400. I rarely carry my 200/4 macro and usually regret it when I do, since it just weighs too much.

Depends, if I am shooting birds or other wildlife, I have the 300mm F4 AF-S mounted, and a 50mm F1.8D or 24-120mm VR in my bag. For general shooting I'll have the 24-120mm mounted, 12-24 Tokina, and the 85mm DX Micro will be in my bag, I keep the macro in there most of the time since it weighs next to nothing.
If I am going to a family thing, I'll grab my E-410 with 14-42mm.
