Is there a way to tell if a Nikon lens is a US lens based of its serial number?
US or Grey Market based on serial number?

yes. But I don't know what it is - CRS setting in. I seem to recall that at one time they actually has US in the serial number, but I could be way off base. Don't seem to see that anymore, so not too sure.

Yes there is but only Nikon knows what the sequence in serial numbers means. I haven't come across anything that defines what each number in a serial sequence means though.

Usually the US versions have US at the end of serial numbers. At least this was the case with all my lenses i got at B&H, and I'm always buying the us version to have the international warranty.
