Effects of pricing with the release of new bodies

I'm in the market (well, as soon as I have a job again) for a body upgrade and I am looking primarily at the d90. With a replacement coming (hopefully sometime in the next 6 months, although I'm hoping for much sooner :) ) I was wondering what you guys have seen in terms of the pricing of discontinued models when the new models are released.

NikoDoby affirmed kind of what I expected and said:

"Usually though older models don't come down in price after a new model. They are just no longer made and become harder to find in-stock. This happens a few months before a new model comes out. The D90 price is already as low as it's going to get.

You might get lucky with a local retailer and find an older model on clearance after a new model comes out but Nikon's tend to sell out quickly unless nobody wants the old model."

but I was just wondering if you guys have had any experience with this? A local photo store here is having a major sale in may and literally everything in stock will be on sale, including DSLR's, so if timing is right (even if the percentage or knockoff price isn't much) I might go that route. Of course it also depends on what happens with the d90 successor, if it is feature rich enough I may have to save up a bit more and go for that, although the rumors of it losing the internal motor are a bit disappointing for me. But enough, before I turn this into another d90 thread, back to the pricing issue,

do you guys/gals have any experience with this situation?

Nope. Prices don't really drop that much after a new camera is introduced. Look at the D40. The price pretty much only dropped $50 or so, it stayed around $400 even after the D40x and the D60 came out.

It's only when you get like 3-4 years when the price drops dramatically. Look at the D200- you can get that sometimes for under $500.

Do you really want to wait 5-7 years for the D3s to drop to $400? :D

I'd rather go out and shoot and worry about lenses instead.

haha, no I didn't plan on waiting that long, I was just wondering if maybe the consumer ideal of needing the latest and greatest and forgetting about the older things, carried over into the dslr market. I assumed it wouldn't, but a boy can dream can't he :)

take NSX advice, go get Yourself camera and start shooting, waiting is the worst thing You can do, there's never a good time to buy a camera

Agreed, there is always something "better" coming. Get a camera and enjoy it. Most of the time I actually wait till just before the new cameras come out, because the old cameras will often be at their lowest prices at that point.

ehh I'm not sure if I agree with this exactly.
First off, I'm not exactly camera-less (I have a dslr that has suited my needs perfectly well for the past few years, whose brand I will not mention ;) to avoid being pitchforked ). I'm also a college student and am not particularly affluent (aka "daddy" isn't going to be plunking down a grand for me to pick up a new camera body), so things like a difference in 50-100 bucks makes a big difference to me.

I think its easy for a lot of you more experiened (read: older) shooters to forget what its like sometimes when picking up a cable release or a sunpak 522 is big excitement.

I know I wouldn't have buyers remorse were I to pick up the d90 right now (or asap), but I am interested in what nikon deems worthy to be its successor. But honestly the inclusion of an internal motor will probably be make or break for me, as buying old glass (especially non-af) is an easy way for me to pick up lenses that are still good quality.
not that I wouldn't shoot manual most of the time anyway, but it'd be a nice addition.

Don't worry foofiebeast I still on occasion use canon cameras too. I still own some canon film cameras. I'm a photographer, not a fanboi ;^)

If money is your main concern you should be aware that any new model will cost a lot more than the current D90. It's suspected that a replacement model will cost between $1000USD to $1200.

As for whether a replacement model will have an AF motor, a senior Nikon engineer already hinted that it will. So you don't have to worry about that. I think the main issue for you will be whether the new features are worth a few hundred dollars more than the D90.

interesting, hopefully that is the case, so my decision can be even harder.

guess I'll just have to wait and find out, although I can't imagine the features I'm gunning for won't be included (i.e. full manual control in movie mode, with the obvious 1080p option as well as more fps options. AF in video would be nice too, but not necessary.)

we'll see we'll see...

I might be one of the senior members on this forum, but that certainly doesn't make me rich and have a large collection of Nikon lenses at my fingertips either.

I too spend try to money wisely. I'm also waist deep in college too, so I absolutely know how you feel. :D

And to make you feel better, I a Sony point and shoot, a Mamiya and Canon film cameras.

To be fair though, I haven't shot with the Canon yet.

I'm in the exactly same boat as you, i have a D60 which was my first camera and i find it very limiting.

My feeling is that video will be the major change, D90 was the first DSLR with video and the T2i makes it look older much than its 18 months.

staying out of the sensor/AF discussion that has been discussed ad nauseum, i figure they will rework the button layout a bit, and make video a more central option, following the 7D and T2i's lead.

given its consumer nature i figure Nikon is willing to "experiment" with this audience, just like it did with video on the D90, rather than on a higher or lower model.

Personally, i feel more comfortable buying a $900 D90 in 3-6 months, and knowing what i'm "missing out" on than paying $800 right now.

And remember, we all have a camera on us, even if its not the best, i dont' think my photography will suffer if i keep my D60 for a few more months.

although what exactly do you mean by paying 900 in a few months? Do you think the prices of the d90 are going to go up after the release of the new one? or were you just making an expression?

but either way, I'm with you it may end up being something I can't "live" without, and I've got the time to wait and find out.

well, based on the discussion earlier in this thread, yes, prices tend to go back to MSRP when new models come out, so while a D90 can be had on special for $800, it will probably go for $900 plus once the next one comes out.

But honestly its such a successful model i would assume it will sell out quickly and the D95/D90s/D7000 will take its place smoothly, albeit at $1000-$1200. so any D90 purchases will have to be second hand.

Personally, i'm hoping the D7000 is disappointing, because i'll probably be able to get a used D90 for $200+ lower than current used prices.

Actually, thats a better question for more experienced users out there; What effect does a new Model have on USED body prices? specifically on the consumer end?

The D70,D80, and D90 kits were all $1299USD when they first came out so I think it's a pretty safe bet that the replacement will be $1299 too.

Just like anything else, when a new model comes out the resale value of used body prices start to fall. Unless the camera is a D40 that is. I've seen people pay more for a used D40 on eBay than a new D3000 with 18-55 kit!

A Canon Elan and a Mamiya DSX1000. And I regularly shoot with a D40 with an 18-135 and a 35mm 1.8. Not exactly pro level equipment, but I'm extremely happy with the results I get.

Jeez, I just realized I completely butchered my last post. :D

When did you say you had a D60...?
