What do you like to shoot portraits with? (FX)

    50mm 1.4
    50mm 1.8
    85mm 1.8
    24-70 2.8
    70-200 2.8 (not VRII model)

When shooting film (the original FX), I loved the 105/2.5 AIS and the 85/2. I would assume they would still work perfectly. When I get an FX body, I bring them out of retirement.

I'd like to further this thread and ask if anyone has a DX lens they like for portraiture. I've got a fine collection of lenses including macros, but none of them impress me as portrait lenses. I'm tempted to get the Voigtlander 58/1.4 (87mm equivalent) as the most likely to succeed.

I almost always shoot at 85, 105, or 135mm. I use 50mm for "wide" shots or 200mm for creamy backgrounds.

Of the lenses you listed the 70-200 would be the best overall with full frame. Nice versatility in that range. An 85 might be better at 85, especially if it were the 1.4, but having that 105, 135, or even 200 range in the same lens really gives you some great options.

50mm is not bad either but probably a little on the short end.

24-70 and 105, considering to get 24 or 35mm for wide

If you are doing strictly portraits I would look at the off-brand 85 / 1.4 lenses, such as the Vivatar. From what I've read they are a great value and give bokeh that is outstanding. Do a quick flickr or web search and you might be surprised what you can get with these lenses.

On FX i would say the 85 1.4 and the 70-200

on DX I just love my 35-70 and my AIS 50 1.4. But, would get the 24-70 and the new 50 1.4 If I had the cash. Would also grab the sigma 50-150 F2.8 which is great for portraits, the nature of the "softness" at F2.8 on that lens great for portraits. (Its sharp with a "glow")

I use my AF 50mm f/1.8 to get my best portraits now (on DX), but if I had something like the AF 85mm f/1.4 or either 105 or 135mm DC lenses, those would be my portrait lenses of choice.
