Compared between Nikkor 16-85mm ED VR II AF-S,Sigma 17-70mm OS DC Macro HSM and 18-105mm (D90 Kit lens)which is better in respect to over-all sharpness and contrast?

The 18-105 is kinda crap (or so I've read). I don't know the Sigma lens, but I'm guessing it isn't as sharp as the 16-85. The amazon people seem to consistantly report front focusing issues.

If you don't need the 16-18 part at the wide end, the 18-55 is probably just as sharp and only costs $100 ($200 w/ VR). I doubt you will miss 55-85.

Its not that the 16-85 is soft or anything like that, but its a lot of money for what it is. Your still getting consumer grade optics and its DX only. I'd much rather spring for a more versital 18-200, or save some money and grab the 18-55 and the 55-200. The only advantage the 16-85 offers over either of these is the extra bit of wideness. On DX, 16mm still isn't quite ultra-wide territory.

I've used the 18-105 and it's an amazing value: sharp wide open and great unless you're afraid of the mount, which is plastic in the 18-105 and metal in the 16-85.

I love the 16-85, precisely for those 2 mm on the wide end. I also hear it's sharper and I know it's more ergonomic than the 18-200. It's the one lens I always carry. If I need to go longer I add the 70-300VR with the same 67mm filter size. The lenses aren't fast, but since I care more about IQ than speed, I quite happy. Rather than faster lenses, I carry a light tripod (costs less, lasts forever and never cares about brands).

I presume you have used the 18-105 then? Why is it kinda crap? OK - It's got a plastic mount and is VRI only but a very useable range, pretty sharp, decent contrast, great value.

The 16-85 is very sharp lens, metal mount, VRII, a bit wider than the rest, but it's still just a decent variable aperture lens, the bokeh is nothing to speak of. The Sigma is untested by anyone really so it's hard to draw conclusions on that one just yet, but looks a good bet. I doubt it's any better than the 16-85 however, in fact I'm sure it won't match the sharpness. The 18-200 is the most veritle, but doesn't carry the same optical sharpness as the 16-85 and is the highest cost.

If you want something that'll stand out, try something like the Tamron 17-50/2.8 (screw drive) or the recent VC version. Great optics, decent build, AF is a bit slow and noisy but that's the only downside.

Someone after my own heart, Lardinio. Those are some great values in my opinion, too. The 17-50 has treated me really well, and when I see my dad I've sometimes borrowed his 18-105 for a week or two and its my favorite nikon kit lens so far.
