Am I crazy for considering a used model for this much $$$? I know the MB10 is worth over $200 and it is something I want. I don't know anything about the kit lens. Is it crap?
I wouldn't buy the D700 if it was to shoot with this lens... if you intend to buy additional lenses it could be good.. If I was you I'd wait for the next nikon announcement, the D700 prices will drop.
Also, there's nothing wrong with buying used as long as you know what you're buying... Most of times that mean using it before buying.. so ebay might not be the best choice but you could watch for local ads via craigslist or kijiji.
If you buy on ebay, make sure you get some video of the camera in working condition.. and watch the seller's stats too.. I wouldn't send that amount of money to a seller with under 500 feedbacks.. and with good rating (good rating, depending on how many sales, usually means over 99.6%) You could read ebay guides about this.

24-120 is very nice on D700, it is Nikon so it should not be a crap.
On the other hand 2600 is not a bargain price for this set.
I was using the 24-120 vr on f100 and was more than happy with it, although there are some users that don't like this lens on FX body. As for buying from e-bay, I don't have any objections - just check they user, and try to contact her/him before.
There is nothing wrong with the 24-120VR, its not a pro lens with a fixed aperture so people complain about it a lot, for some reason. It's a kit lens and performs like one.

My wife uses this lens on her D60 and she is very happy with it. I just got one real cheap to use on my D300.
If you are a professional and need the best quality this lens is probably not for you, but for a serious ameteur I think it is fine.

Yup I'd say so. I've bought and sold items on eBay for 6 years and I've only ever had one problem (non-paying bidder, which eBay quickly dealt with, so no loss on my side as you don't ship till you are paid).
Thats a great deal! The 24-120mm VR as mentioned here is a fine lens for walking around shooting casual shots here and there. Its just not a landscape lens or for anything you would be paid for. The lens is very useful though don't believe all the bashing about it you read on the internet. This deal sounds great because you also get the $200 MB-D10 battery pack, a huge 16GB card, and even if the carrying bag is total crap its still a nice throw in. The D700 is an unreal camera I just love mine. Only trust ebay if you pay with paypal and the seller has a lot of sales and a positive feedback of at least %99.5. If they except refunds for even 7 days after the sale its a bonus also. Normally be careful with ebay though.
The price should be about $2100-$2400 (because of low actuations) for the D700

The deal should be priced at around $3100 at the very least. Could be as high as $3400! However, this price and other deals will get lower over the next few months as we get closer to the next FX censor in a small body.
I'd be careful with extra superduper offers anywhere on the web UNLESS the vendor is really reliable like B&H, Adorama, Robert White, etc.
The saying "If something is too good to be true, then it most probably is" applies in online purchases 100%.
On eBay look at the reputation of the seller, it tells you just about everything you need to know.
You also have to check what the seller has been selling in the past. You should again be wary if the past sales are all cheap items and then suddenly something more expensive appears.
Do some googleing and you should find some lists that advise people what to look at when making purchases on eBay.
